Nucleon-Nucleon Interactions on the Lattice

We consider the nucleon-nucleon potential in quenched and partiallyquenched QCD. The leading one-meson exchange contribution to the potential is found to fall off exponentially at long-distances, in contrast with the Yukawa-type behaviour found in QCD. This unphysical component of the two-nucleon potential has important implications for the extraction of nuclear properties from lattice simulations.

I give an overview of efforts in the last year to calculate interactions among hadrons using lattice QCD. Results discussed include the extraction of low-energy phase shifts and three-body interactions , and the study of pion and kaon condensation. We present results of the first fully dynamical lattice QCD determination of nucleon-nucleon scattering lengths in the 1S0 channel and 3S1 - 3D1 coupled channels. The calculations are performed with domain-wall valence quarks on the MILC staggered configurations with a lattice spacing of b = 0.125 fm in the isospin-symmetric limit, and in the absence of electromagnetic interactions.
