Rigidity of packings

چکیده

In Ludwig Danzer’s Habilitatiionsschrift [L. Danzer, Endliche Punktmengen auf der 2-Sphäre mit möglichst grossem minimalabstand, Habilitationsschrift, Göttingen, 1963] he initiated a study of the local nature of the packings from the point of view of whether their density can be increased by a small perturbation of the packing configuration. This is an abbreviated biased introduction to the theory of such locally maximally dense packings of disks in various spaces from the point of view of the theory of tensegrity structures. This has applications to jamming of granular materials as well as leading to a better understanding of jammed packings. c © 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Enumerating Finite Sphere Packings

We consider packings of n identical spherical particles that bind to one another without deformation or overlap, and without any long range interactions. Combining graph theoretic enumeration with basic geometry, we analytically solve for packings of n ≤ 10 particles satisfying minimal rigidity constraints (≥ 3 contacts per particle and ≥ 3n− 6 total contacts). We find that the onset of packing...

Deriving Finite Sphere Packings

Sphere packing problems have a rich history in both mathematics and physics; yet, relatively few analytical analyses of sphere packings exist, and answers to seemingly simple questions are unknown. Here, we present an analytical method for deriving all packings of n spheres in R3 satisfying minimal rigidity constraints (≥ 3 contacts per sphere and ≥ 3n− 6 total contacts). We derive such packing...

Non-rigidity of Spherical Inversive Distance Circle Packings

We give a counterexample of Bowers-Stephenson's conjecture in the spherical case: spherical inversive distance circle packings are not determined by their inversive distances.

Rigidity loss in disordered systems: three scenarios.

We reveal significant qualitative differences in the rigidity transition of three types of disordered network materials: randomly diluted spring networks, jammed sphere packings, and stress-relieved networks that are diluted using a protocol that avoids the appearance of floppy regions. The marginal state of jammed and stress-relieved networks are globally isostatic, while marginal randomly dil...

Critical slowing down and hyperuniformity on approach to jamming.

Hyperuniformity characterizes a state of matter that is poised at a critical point at which density or volume-fraction fluctuations are anomalously suppressed at infinite wavelengths. Recently, much attention has been given to the link between strict jamming (mechanical rigidity) and (effective or exact) hyperuniformity in frictionless hard-particle packings. However, in doing so, one must nece...

2 00 1 Multiplicity of Generation , Selection , and Classification Procedures for Jammed Hard - Particle Packings

Hard-particle packings have served as useful starting points to study the structure of diverse systems such as liquids, living cells, granular media, glasses, and amorphous solids. Howard Reiss has played a major role in helping to illuminate our understanding of hardparticle systems, which still offer scientists many interesting conundrums. Jammed configurations of hard particles are of great ...
