Identifying drizzle within marine stratus with W-band radar reflectivity
نویسندگان
چکیده
Airborne cloud radar and cloud microphysical data, collected in summertime stratus clouds off the Oregon coast, are analyzed to obtain an empirical threshold radar reflectivity above which drizzle can be expected in warm marine stratus. Such clouds, which are prevalent over the eastern subtropical oceans, have a profound impact on global climate. This study finds that the threshold reflectivity for drizzle is a strong function of height within the cloud layer. Both radar reflectivities and calculated reflectivities (based on measured droplet spectra) indicate that the threshold is most crisply defined in the lower half of the stratus cloud deck. The use of the threshold reflectivity profile to flag drizzle is illustrated by examining the dependency of radar reflectivity on cloud water content. Such dependency is non-existent in marine stratus in general, but a clear relationship emerges when drizzle cases are excluded. D 2003 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Continental Stratus Clouds: A Case Study Using Coordinated Remote Sensing and Aircraft Measurements
A continental stratus cloud layer was studied by advanced ground-based remote sensing instruments and aircraft probes on 30 April 1994 from the Cloud and Radiation Testbed site in north-central Oklahoma. The boundary layer structure clearly resembled that of a cloud-topped mixed layer, and the cloud content is shown to be near adiabatic up to the cloud-top entrainment zone. A cloud retrieval al...
متن کاملThe Potential of a Spaceborne Cloud Radar for the Detection of Stratocumulus Clouds
The radar reflectivity and liquid water content of stratocumulus clouds have been computed from cloud droplet spectra recorded during more than 4000 km of cloud penetrations by an aircraft, and the probability of detecting various values of liquid water content as a function of the radar sensitivity threshold has been derived. The goal of the study is to specify the sensitivity required for any...
متن کاملJoint retrievals of cloud and drizzle in marine boundary layer clouds using ground-based radar, lidar and zenith radiances
Active remote sensing of marine boundary-layer clouds is challenging as drizzle drops often dominate the observed radar reflectivity. We present a new method to simultaneously retrieve cloud and drizzle vertical profiles in drizzling boundary-layer clouds using surface-based observations of radar reflectivity, lidar attenuated backscatter, and zenith radiances under conditions when precipitatio...

We used vertical velocity data from a 3 mm wavelength (94‐GHz) vertically pointing Doppler radar in combination with collocated...
