Selecting the right bird model in experimental studies on endocrine disrupting chemicals
نویسنده
چکیده
Birds have been used as model species in ecotoxicological research for decades but have only recently been included in toxicity testing schemes. However, the avian fauna is very diverse. Given this diversity, the ecology, behavior, and reproduction should be considered when selecting the appropriate bird model in ecotoxicological studies. This article focusses on choosing the right bird model species for experimental studies with endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). EDCs have been associated with adverse effects on reproduction and development in birds and other wildlife. In addition, new EDCs continue to emerge and the concern for potential effects in humans and wildlife is calling for increased toxicity testing and hence appropriate model species. Common bird model species used in ecotoxicological studies investigating EDCs will be reviewed. In addition, considerations for selecting the right bird model, along with potential drawbacks and restrictions on the use of certain species will be discussed.

متن کاملEvaluation of photocatalytic process using GO/ZnO nanocomposites under LED irradiation for removal of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) from aqueous solutions
Background and Aim: Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs), and potential EDCs are mostly man-made, found in various materials such as pesticides, metals, additives or contaminants in food, and personal care products. Phthalates are a group of these compounds that are carcinogenic to animals and can cause fetal death and congenital anomalies. The aim of this study was to investigate the photocat...

Background: There is an important evidence that prolonged exposure to several endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). These are persistent materials with unique environmental properties such as intake of contaminated food, water and air, irrespective of proximity to industries, which are suspected to have endocrine disrupting activities. Perflurooctanoic acid (PFOA) and diethylstilbestrol (EDCs)...
متن کاملHuman Health Risk-based Prioritization of Endocrine-disrupting Chemicals in Water: A Perspective
Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (“EDCs”, hereafter) have attracted special attention due to its reported toxic effects on children, pregnant woman and elderly. Current EDC-based prioritization approaches do not explicitly include human health risks. This study proposed a theoretical perspective on development of a human health risk-based prioritization framework for monitoring endocrine-disrupti...

The adsorption properties and mechanics of selected endocrine disrupting compounds; 17 β-estradiol, 17 α – ethinylestradiol and bisphenol A on locally available black tea leaves waste and granular activated carbon were investigated. The results obtained indicated that the kinetics of adsorption were pH, adsorbent dose, contact time and temperature dependent with equilibrium being reached at 20 ...
