چکیده

Chandra observations of the core of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253 reveal a heavily absorbed source of hard X-rays embedded within the nuclear starburst region. The source has an unabsorbed, 2 to 10 keV luminosity of ≥ 10 erg s and photoionizes the surrounding gas. We observe this source through a dusty torus with a neutral absorbing column density of NH ∼ 2 × 10 23 cm. The torus is hundreds of pc across and collimates the starburst-driven nuclear outflow. We suggest that the ionizing source is an intermediate-mass black hole or a weakly accreting supermassive black hole, which may signal the beginnings or endings of AGN activity. The 0.3–30 Kev Spectra of Powerful Starburst Galaxies: Nustar and Chandra Observations of Ngc

We present nearly simultaneous Chandra and NuSTAR observations of two actively star-forming galaxies within 50 Mpc: NGC 3256 and NGC 3310. Both galaxies are significantly detected by both Chandra and NuSTAR, which together provide the first-ever spectra of these two galaxies spanning 0.3–30 keV. The X-ray emission from both galaxies is spatially resolved by Chandra; we find that hot gas dominat...

Estimating Starburst Supernova Rates Using OSSE Observations of M82 and NGC 253

We have used the OSSE observations of the starburst galaxies NGC 253 and M82 to obtain upper limits to the Type Ia and Ib supernova rates in these galaxies. Monte Carlo simulations of randomly occurring supernova events in NGC 253 and M82 were performed to evaluate the significance of our upper limit to the 0.847 and1.238 MeV Co gamma-ray line fluxes on the supernova rate from these two galaxie...

Numerical studies on the structure of the cosmic ray electron halo in starburst galaxies

The structure of the cosmic ray electron halo of a starburst galaxy depends strongly on the nature of galactic wind and the configuration of the magnetic field. We have investigated these dependencies by solving numerically the propagation of electrons originating in starburst galaxies, most likely in supernova remnants. The calculations are made for several models for the galactic winds and fo...

High energy γ - ray emission from the starburst nucleus of NGC 253

The high density medium that characterizes the central regions of starburst galaxies and its power to accelerate particles up to relativistic energies make these objects good candidates as γ-rays sources. In this paper, a self-consistent model of the multifrequency emission of the starburst galaxy NGC 253, from radio to gamma-rays, is presented. The model is in agreement with all current measur...

X - ray observations of the starburst galaxy NGC 253 I . Point sources

We report the results of a deep spatial, spectral, and timing analysis of ROSAT HRI and PSPC observations of the edge-on starburst galaxy NGC 253. In this first paper, point-like X-ray sources detected within the galaxy and in the field are discussed. The sources are characterized by their X-ray properties (including comparisons with results from the Einstein and ASCA satellites), by correlatio...
