چکیده

We look into the problem of estimating a regression function that exhibits peaks, i.e. discontinuities in the first derivative. In the neighbourhood of such a discontinuity we investigate the behaviour of the local linear fit and find that it is not consistent for estimating the first derivative, and for estimating the function itself it loses in the rate of convergence. Indeed, near such points the local linear fit suffers significant finite sample bias. An objective quantity that indicates the presence of discontinuities in the first derivative is proposed. It is then used to construct an estimator that equals the classical local linear fit when possible, but switches to one of the one-sided estimators when appropriate to reduce bias at or near peaks. A simulation study, including comparisons with other methods, investigates the finitesample behaviour of the proposed estimator. We illustrate the use of the method on real data examples.

Local Linear Fitting Under Near Epoch Dependence: Uniform Consistency with Convergence Rates

Local linear fitting is a popular nonparametric method in statistical and econometric modelling. Lu and Linton (2007) established the pointwise asymptotic distribution for the local linear estimator of a nonparametric regression function under the condition of near epoch dependence. In this paper, we further investigate the uniform consistency of this estimator. The uniform strong and weak cons...

Texture fractal dimension is a physical index to describe soil particle size distribution having a variety of applications. Fractal dimension may be calculated from three relations of mass-time, mass-diameter and modified mass-diameter (Kravchenko-Zhang) with two linear and nonlinear options for fittings. The aim of the present study was to compare methods and select an appropriate one and fitt...

Automated single-ion peak fitting as an efficient approach for analyzing complex chromatographic data.

Chromatography provides important detail on the composition of environmental samples and their chemical processing. However, the complexity of these samples and their tendency to contain many structurally and chemically similar compounds frequently results in convoluted or poorly resolved data. Data reduction from raw chromatograms of complex environmental data into integrated peak areas conseq...

Relationships between Electroencephalographic Spectral Peaks Across Frequency Bands

The degree to which electroencephalographic spectral peaks are independent, and the relationships between their frequencies have been debated. A novel fitting method was used to determine peak parameters in the range 2-35 Hz from a large sample of eyes-closed spectra, and their interrelationships were investigated. Findings were compared with a mean-field model of thalamocortical activity, whic...

Cardiac arrhythmias are one of the most common heart diseases that may cause the death of the patient. Therefore, it is extremely important to detect cardiac arrhythmias.  3 categories of arrhythmia, namely, PAC, PVC, and normal are considered in this paper based on classifier fusion using evidence theory. In this study, at first a sample is carrying out the ECG signal with 250 point.  Moreove...
