چکیده

We investigate the presence and properties of PAHs on the surface of circumstellar disks around Herbig Ae/Be stars by comparing the predictions of disk models with observations. We present results of a radiation transfer code for disks heated by the central star, in hydrostatic equilibrium in the vertical direction (flared disks). The dust is a mixture of large grains in thermal equilibrium, transiently heated small grains and PAHs. Special attention is given to the influence of the stellar, disk and PAHs properties on the strength of the PAH emission lines and their spatial distribution. The models predict an infrared SED showing PAH features at 3.3, 6.2, 7.7, and 11.3 μm clearly visible above the continuum, and with some of them very strong. The PAH emission, spatially extended, comes mostly from the outer disk region (R ∼100 AU) while the continuum emission at similar wavelengths, mostly due to warm large grains, is confined to the innermost disk regions (R ∼few AU). We compare the model results to infrared observations from ISO and ground-based telescopes of some thirty Herbig Ae/Be stars. Most of the observed PAH features in objects with spectral type later than B9 are well described by our disk models and we discuss in some detail the PAH characteristics one can derive from the existing data. Objects with strong radiation field (generally earlier than about B9) have the 3.3 μm feature (often the only one observed) much weaker than predicted, and we discuss possible explanations (dissipation of the disk, photoevaporation or modification of the PAH properties).

Circumstellar disks around Herbig Ae/Be stars: Polarization, outflows and binary orbits

The geometrical relationship between the distribution of circumstellar matter, observed optical linear polarization, outflows and binary orbital plane in Herbig Ae/Be stars is investigated. Optical linear polarization measurements carried out for a number of Herbig Ae/Be stars that are either known to be in binary systems and/or have bipolar jets are presented in this paper. Available informati...

PAH chemistry and IR emission from circumstellar disks

Aims. The chemistry of, and infrared (IR) emission from, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in disks around Herbig Ae/Be and T Tauri stars are investigated. PAHs can exist in different charge states and they can bear different numbers of hydrogen atoms. The equilibrium (steady-state) distribution over all possible charge/hydrogenation states depends on the size and shape of the PAHs and on...

First Evidence for Dusty Disks around Herbig Be Stars

We have carried out a high-sensitivity search for circumstellar disks around Herbig Be stars in the continuum at 1.4mm and 2.7mm using the IRAM interferometer at the Plateau de Bure (PdBI) . In this letter, we report data on three well studied B0 stars, MWC 1080, MWC 137 and R Mon. The two latter have also been observed in the continuum at 0.7 cm and 1.3 cm using the NRAO Very Large Array (VLA)...

DISCOVERY OF AN OPTICALLY THICK, EDGE-ON DISK AROUND THE HERBIG Ae STAR PDS 144N

We have discovered an optically thick, edge-on circumstellar disk around a Herbig Ae star in the binary system PDS 144, providing the first intermediate-mass analog of HK Tau and similar T Tauri stars. This system consists of a V ! 13mag primary and a fainter companion, with the spectra of both stars showing evidence for circumstellar disks and accretion; both stars were classified as Herbig Ae...

Constraints on Disk Sizes around Young Intermediate-mass Stars: Nulling Interferometric Observations of Herbig Ae Objects

Physical models of circumstellar disks surrounding pre-main sequence stars are currently constrained primarily by the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the system. Here we present first results from a survey of nearby Herbig Ae stars using nulling interferometry. We measure the spatial extent of the mid-IR emission for the stars HD 150193, HD 163296, and HD 179218. The results indicate the ...
