Abstract| Adding a sharing method to a genetic algorithm promotes the formation and maintenance of stable subpopulations. This paper explores the limits of sharing by deriving closed-form expressions for the expected time to disappearance of a subpopula-tion. The time to disappearance is shown to be an exponential function of population size, with relative subpopulation tnesses determining the base of the exponential. However, disappearance time decreases rapidly as the number of subpopulations increases. Both theoretical and experimental illustrations are given of genetic drift in sharing.

Every Niching Method has its Niche : Fitness Sharing and Implicit Sharing

Various extensions to the Genetic Algorithm (GA) attempt to nd all or most optima in a search space containing several optima. Many of these emulate natural speciation. For co-evolutionary learning to succeed in a range of management and control problems, such as learning game strategies, such methods must nd all or most optima. However, suitable comparison studies are rare. We compare two simi...

Load Sharing Control of Parallel Inverters with Uncertainty in the Output Filter Impedances for Islanding Operation of AC Micro-Grid

Parallel connection of inverter modules is a solution to increase reliability, efficiency and redundancy of inverters in Micro-Grid system. Proper load sharing among parallel inverters is a key point. The circulating current among the inverters can greatly reduce the efficiency or even cause instability of the system. In this paper, a control strategy for improving the load sharing performance ...

Niching in Monte Carlo Filtering Algorithms

Nonlinear multimodal filtering problems are usually addressed via Monte Carlo algorithms. These algorithms involve sampling procedures that are similar to proportional selection in genetic algorithms, and that are prone to failure due to genetic drift. This work investigates the feasibility and the relevance of niching strategies in this context. Sharing methods are evaluated experimentally, an...

The variance of identity-by-descent sharing in the Wright-Fisher model.

Widespread sharing of long, identical-by-descent (IBD) genetic segments is a hallmark of populations that have experienced recent genetic drift. Detection of these IBD segments has recently become feasible, enabling a wide range of applications from phasing and imputation to demographic inference. Here, we study the distribution of IBD sharing in the Wright-Fisher model. Specifically, using coa...

The Effects of Both Recent and Long-Term Selection and Genetic Drift Are Readily Evident in North American Barley Breeding Populations.

Barley was introduced to North America ∼400 yr ago but adaptation to modern production environments is more recent. Comparisons of allele frequencies among growth habits and spike (inflorescence) types in North America indicate that significant genetic differentiation has accumulated in a relatively short evolutionary time span. Allele frequency differentiation is greatest among barley with two...
