چکیده

We present results from the on-going spectral analysis of gamma-ray bursts measured by the COMPTEL instrument in its main Compton \Telescope" observing mode (0.75{30 MeV). Thus far, 18 bursts have been analyzed from three years (April 1991 { April 1994) of observations. The time-averaged spectra of these events above 1 MeV are all consistent with a simple power law model with spectral index in the range 1.5{3.5. Exponential, thermal bremsstrahlung and thermal synchrotron models are statistically inconsistent with the burst sample, although they can adequately describe some of the individual burst spectra. We nd good agreement between burst spectra measured simultaneously by BATSE, COMPTEL and EGRET, which typically show a spectral transition or \break" in the BATSE energy range around a few hundred keV followed by simple power law emission extending to hundreds of MeV. However, the temporal relation between MeV and GeV (e.g., as measured by EGRET) burst emission is still unclear. Measurement of rapid variability at MeV energies in the stronger bursts provides evidence that either the sources are nearby (within the Galaxy) or the gamma-ray emission is relativistically beamed.

Comptel Locations and Spectra of Gamma-ray Bursts

In three years of operation, COMPTEL has measured the locations (mean accuracy 1 ) and spectra (0.75{30 MeV) of 18 gamma-ray bursts and continues to observe new events every 1{2 months. The existing COMPTEL bursts have been analyzed as a group to study the smallscale angular distribution and MeV emission properties. Furthermore, measurements of individual strong bursts like GRB 930131 and GRB 9...

MeV Measurements of Gamma - RayBursts by CGRO -

Since the launch of the Compton Gamma{Ray Observatory in April 1991, the imaging COMPTEL telescope has accumulated positions and 0.75{ 30 MeV spectra of more than thirty gamma-ray bursts within its sr eld of view. In an ongoing collaboration with BACODINE/GCN, COMPTEL positions are relayed to a global network of multiwavelength observers in near real time (10 minutes). Here we summarize the MeV...

The Spectrum of GRB 930131 ( “ Superbowl Burst ” ) from 20 keV to 200 MeV

We have constructed a broad-band spectrum for GRB 930131 (the “Superbowl Burst”), ranging from 20 keV to 200 MeV, by combining spectral information from the Gamma Ray Observatory’s BATSE, COMPTEL and EGRET instruments. We present general methods for combining spectra from different time intervals obtained by the same instrument as well as for combining spectra from the same time interval taken ...

New Comptel Results on Pulsar Studies at Mev Energies

COMPTEL, aboard the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory , has detected at MeV energies PSR B1951+32 and found indications for a signal from PSR B0656+14. In the combined COMPTEL { EGRET spectra it is apparent that the maximum luminosities of these objects are reached in the COMPTEL energy range, or at least spectral features/bumps are apparent. These spectra can be compared with those of four other p...

ON THE ORIGIN OF THE MeV GAMMA-RAY BACKGROUND

In this paper, we suggest a new hypothesis for explaining the spectrum of the extragalactic MeV γ-ray background as observed by COMPTEL and SMM. We propose that both the flux level and spectrum can be accounted for as a superposition of non-thermal MeV tails in the spectra of Seyfert galaxies and other AGN. Although present detectors are not sensitive enough to obtain MeV data from individual e...
