چکیده

Traditional Computer Science curriculum focuses on the training for logic reasoning and programming skills. System integration are often not covered in most computer science curricula. As the embedded platforms migrate from 8-bit microprocessors to 32-bit microprocessors, the engineers require different skills to design modern embedded systems. The Computer Science faculty at several universities in Taiwan have collaborate to design a new course to meet such needs. In this article, we report the design rationale and current status of this course.

A software integration approach for designing and assessing dependable embedded systems

Embedded systems increasingly entail complex issues of hardware–software (HW–SW) co-design. As the number and range of SW functional components typically exceed the finite HW resources, a common approach is that of resource sharing (i.e., the deployment of diverse SW functionalities onto the same HW resources). Consequently, to result in ameaningful co-design solution, one needs to factor the i...

A comprehensive integration infrastructure for embedded system design

A System-on-a-Chip (SoC) is the most successful example of how the evolution of the chip integration technology allows the manufacture of complex embedded systems. However, the bulk of the design effort, to efficiently combine the HW and SW components in a SoC, still resides in the HW/SW interfacing architecture. A good HW/SW integration strategy has a positive impact either in performance, eff...

System Level Hardware-Software Design Exploration with XCS

The current trend in Embedded Systems (ES) design is moving towards the integration of increasingly complex applications on a single chip. An Embedded System has to satisfy both performance constraints and cost limits; it is composed of both dedicated elements, i.e. hardware (HW) components, and programmable units, i.e. software (SW) components, Hardware (HW) and software (SW) components have t...

Automated Design Space Exploration on System Level for Embedded Systems

The design of embedded systems has to address several interacting design dimensions to implement parallelism, distribution over different locations, hard real-time requirements and design space exploration today. Thus a structured design process has to deal with heterogeneous requirements and restrictions. The integration of dedicated tasks for HW-design and SW-design as well as real-time opera...

Systematic Embedded Software Generation from SystemC

The embedded software design cost represents an important percentage of the embedded-system development costs [1]. This paper presents a method for systematic embedded software generation that reduces the software generation cost in a platform-based HW/SW codesign methodology for embedded systems based on SystemC. The goal is that the same SystemC code allows system-level specification and veri...
