Gamma-Ray Pulsar Studies with GLAST
نویسنده
چکیده
Some pulsars have their maximum observable energy output in the gamma-ray band, offering the possibility of using these high-energy photons as probes of the particle acceleration and interaction processes in pulsar magnetospheres. After an extended hiatus between satellite missions, the recently-launched AGILE mission and the upcoming Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST) Large Area Telescope (LAT) will allow gamma-ray tests of the theoretical models developed based on past discoveries. With its greatly improved sensitivity, better angular resolution, and larger energy reach than older instruments, GLAST LAT should detect dozens to hundreds of new gamma-ray pulsars and measure luminosities, light curves, and phase-resolved spectra with unprecedented resolution. It will also have the potential to find radio-quiet pulsars like Geminga, using blind search techniques. Cooperation with radio and X-ray pulsar astronomers is an important aspect of the LAT team’s planning for pulsar studies.

Future Facilities for Gamma-Ray Pulsar Studies
Pulsars seen at gamma-ray energies offer insight into particle acceleration to very high energies, along with information about the geometry and interaction processes in the magnetospheres of these rotating neutron stars. During the next decade, a number of new gamma-ray facilities will become available for pulsar studies. This brief review describes the motivation for gamma-ray pulsar studies,...
متن کاملGamma-ray Pulsar Simulations for the Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST)
We present here the current status of pulsar simulations for the Large Area Telescope, the main instrument on the GLAST mission. We present PulsarSpectrum, a pulsar simulator that can reproduce with high detail gamma-ray emission from pulsars. PulsarSpectrum takes into account advanced timing effects, e.g. period changes with time, barycentering effects and glitches. Other ancillary tools have ...
متن کاملPulsarspectrum: Simulating Gamma-ray Pulsars for the Glast Mission
Pulsars are among the most exciting gamma ray sources in the Universe and can serve as unique sites for the study of emission processes in extreme physical environments. The Gamma ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST) will increase dramatically our knowledge of gamma ray pulsars physics. In particular the Large Area Telescope (LAT), the main GLAST instrument, will provide more detailed observa...
متن کاملHigh-Energy Gamma Rays from Neutron Stars in Supernova Remnants: From EGRET to GLAST
At least three pulsars in supernova remnants were detected at E > 100 MeV by EGRET on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. Efforts to search for additional pulsars in the EGRET data have been unsuccessful due to limited statistics. An example is the recently-discovered radio pulsar J2229+6114, where efforts to search the EGRET data using several different methods failed to find significant eviden...
متن کاملBinaries and GLAST
Radio and X-ray observations of the relativistic jets of microquasars show evidence for the acceleration of particles to very high energies. Signatures of non-thermal processes occurring closer in to the compact object can also be found. In addition, three binaries are now established emitters of high (>100 MeV) and/or very high (>100 GeV) energy gamma-rays. High-energy emission can originate f...
