Gastrostomy Placement in Children: Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy or Laparoscopic Gastrostomy?

چکیده
The aim of this study is to compare the outcomes and the complications between the 2 most adopted procedures for gastrostomy placement: percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) and laparoscopic gastrostomy (LG) in children. We present our study on 69 patients (male: 46/female: 23): group 1 (37 patients, 54%) undergoing PEG, group 2 (32 patients, 46%) undergoing LG. A total of 5 major complications were observed all in the PEG group (13.5%), no major complication was observed in the LG group (P-value<0.05). A total of 12 minor complications were observed: 4 occurred in the PEG group (10.8%) and 8 (25%) in the laparoscopic gastrostmoy group, not statistically relevant. We suggest that the LG should be considered the preferred technique for gastrostomy placement in pediatric patients, particularly in newborns, children with significant skeletal malformations, and patients who underwent previous abdominal surgery.

Study of Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy Outcomes
Background and Objective: Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is the technique of choice for providing enteral access to patients who require long-term enteral nutrition. This study was performed to evaluate the outcomes and complications of PEG. Materials and Methods: In this semi-experimental study, 77 patients (45 men, 32 women; age mean: 58.9±19.7 years, Min: 14 years, Max: 89 Years)...
متن کاملLaparoscopic-Assisted Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy in Children and Adolescents
OBJECTIVE Pediatric gastric access for long-term enteral feeding may be performed via a laparotomy, laparoscopy, or a percutaneous approach. In children and adolescents, laparoscopic-assisted gastrostomy may be difficult due to a thick abdominal wall. Therefore, if the abdominal wall is estimated to be >2 cm on physical examination, or in children in whom a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy w...

The various technical options that have been described for gastrostomy tube placement in children include the time honored Stamm procedure, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG), percutaneous fluoroscopy-guided gastrostomy, several types of laparoscope-assisted gastrostomy (LG), video-assisted gastrostomy, and a combined laparoscopic and endoscopic approach as well as different variations o...
متن کاملLaparoscopic-Assisted Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy Tube Placement
BACKGROUND Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is the most common way of placing a feeding tube. Sometimes PEG cannot be used to safely place a feeding tube, most commonly secondary to an inability to transilluminate the abdominal wall. Whereas open gastrostomy was previously necessary in such cases, laparoscopic-assisted percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (LAPEG) is a viable option and ...
متن کاملEndoscopic Gastrostomy Button With Double-Lasso U-Stitch in Children
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Placement of surgical gastric access is a common operative procedure, with multiple techniques. We describe a cost-effective, safe, and easy-to-perform primary endoscopic gastrostomy button placement in the pediatric population, using a novel double-transcutaneous lasso U-stitch push technique. METHODS This is a retrospective review of a single center's experience of...
