Clues to the origin of parsec to kilo-parsec jet misalignments in EGRET sources

چکیده
The apparent position angle difference ∆PA between parsec and kilo-parsec jets in blazars can be related to the bending properties of the jets. We present correlations between the misalignment ∆PA and the ratio of radio to broad-line emission for a sample of γ-ray blazars. The present study is limited to EGRET sources due to uniform data for the radio and optical properties of these sources being easily available. The broad-line emission is known to be a good indicator of the accretion power for both steep and flat-spectrum quasars. We find significant correlations between ∆PA and the ratio of radio flux (total and radio core flux respectively) to broad-line flux, which is consistent with the beaming scenario. A weak correlation between ∆PA and the ratio of extended radio to broad-line flux might imply that the intrinsic bend of the jet is related with the ratio of jet mechanical power to accretion power.

Multi - frequency investigation of the parsec - and kilo - parsec - scale radio structures in high - redshift quasar PKS 1402 + 044
Aims. We investigate the frequency-dependent radio properties of the jet of the luminous high-redshift (z = 3.2) radio quasar PKS 1402+044 (J1405+0415) by means of radio interferometric observations. Methods. The observational data were obtained with the VLBI Space Observatory Programme (VSOP) at 1.6 and 5 GHz, supplemented by other multi-frequency observations with the The observations span a ...
متن کاملMOJAVE : Monitoring of Jets in AGN with VLBA Experiments
The MOJAVE blazar sample consists of the 133 brightest, most compact radio-loud AGN in the northern sky, and is selected on the basis of VLBA 2 cm correlated flux density exceeding 1.5 Jy (2 Jy for declinations south of 0 •) at any epoch between 1994 and 2003. Since 1994 we have been gathering VLBA data on the sample to measure superluminal jet speeds and to better understand the parsec−scale k...
متن کاملExtended radio emission in Mojave blazars: Challenges to unification
We present the results of a study on the kiloparsec-scale radio emission in the complete flux density limited MOJAVE sample, comprising 135 radio-loud active galactic nuclei. New 1.4 GHz Very Large Array (VLA) radio images of six quasars and previously unpublished images of 21 blazars are presented, along with an analysis of the high-resolution (VLA A-array) 1.4 GHz emission for the entire samp...
متن کاملRadio Luminosity Function, Importance of Jet Power, and Radio Properties of Nearby Low-Luminosity Active Galactic Nuclei
We present the completed results of a high resolution radio imaging survey of all (∼200) low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs) in the Palomar Spectroscopic Sample of all (∼470) nearby bright northern galaxies. The high incidence of pc-scale radio nuclei, with implied brightness temperatures >∼ 107 K, and sub-parsec jets argue for accreting black holes in > ∼50% of all LLAGNs; there is ...
متن کاملBendings of radio jets in BL Lacertae objects I: EVN and MERLIN observations
Abstract. Several blazars, and BL Lac objects in particular, show a misalignment between the jet orientation on parsec and kiloparsec scales. Some authors (i.e. Conway & Murphy, 1993) have attempted to explain this behaviour invoking helical jets for misalignment angles around 90, showing how in this case there are interesting implications for the understanding of the medium into which the jet ...
