Simple theoretical models for resonant cold atom interactions
نویسندگان
چکیده
Magnetically tunable scattering resonances have been used with great success for precise control of s-wave scattering lengths in ultracold atomic collisions. We describe relatively simple yet quite powerful analytic treatments of such resonances based on the analytic properties of the van der Waals long range potential. This theory can be used to characterize a number of properties of specific resonances that have been used successfully in various experiments with 87Rb, 85Rb, 40K, and 6Li. Optical Feshbach resonances are also possible and may be practical with narrow intercombination line photoassociative transitions in species like Sr and Yb. This will be published in Atomic Physics 20, the Proceedings of the 20th international Conference on Atomic Physics, Innsbruck, Austria, July 2006.

Collective resonance fluorescence in small and dense atom clouds: Comparison between theory and experiment
We study the emergence of a collective optical response of a cold and dense Rb atomic cloud to a near-resonant low-intensity light when the atom number is gradually increased. Experimental observations are compared with microscopic stochastic simulations of recurrent scattering processes between the atoms that incorporate the atomic multilevel structure and the optical measurement setup. We ana...
متن کاملQuantum magnetism and topological ordering via enhanced Rydberg-dressing near Förster-resonances
We devise a cold-atom approach to realizing a broad range of bi-linear quantum magnets. Our scheme is based on off-resonant single-photon excitation of Rydberg P -states (Rydberg-dressing), whose strong interactions are shown to yield controllable XYZ-interactions between effective spins, represented by different atomic ground states. The distinctive features of Förster-resonant Rydberg atom in...
متن کاملDiffraction-contrast imaging of cold atoms
We consider the inverse problem of in-line holography, applied to minimally destructive imaging of cold atom clouds. Absorption imaging near resonance provides a simple, but destructive measurement of atom column density. Imaging off resonance greatly reduces heating, and sequential images may be taken. Under the conditions required for off-resonant imaging, the generally intractable inverse pr...
متن کاملQuantum accelerator modes: A tool for atom optics
We describe an atom-optical technique for producing large changes in the momentum of cold atoms using a pulsed standing wave of off-resonant light. Experimental results are presented showing how the efficiency and the amount of momentum transfer depend on the parameters of the light field. We also present a theoretical analysis and derive a closed formula which is in excellent agreement with th...
متن کاملEnhancement of Rydberg atom interactions using ac Stark shifts.
The ac Stark effect was used to induce resonant energy transfer between translationally cold 85Rb Rydberg atoms. When a 28.5 GHz dressing field was set at specific field strengths, the two-atom dipole-dipole process 43d5/2+43d5/2-->45p3/2+41f was dramatically enhanced, due to induced degeneracy of the initial and final states. This method for enhancing interactions is complementary to dc electr...
