چکیده

This paper contains an extension of the identification method proposed in Jun, Pinkse, and Xu (2009, JPX), which is based on a generated collection of sets, i.e. a Dynkin system. We demonstrate the usefulness of this extension in the context of the model proposed by Vytlacil and Yıldız (2007, VY). VY formulate a fully nonparametric model featuring a nested weakly separable structure in which an endogenous regressor is binary–valued. The extension of the JPX approach considered here allows for nonbinary–valued discrete endogenous regressors and requires weaker support conditions than VY in the binary case, which substantially broadens the range of potential applications of the VY model. In this paper we focus on the binary case for which we provide several alternative simpler sufficient conditions and outline an estimation strategy. Our results allow for the possibility of a nonbinary endogenous regressor, but we provide examples for the nonbinary case in a separate paper.

Multiple Discrete Endogenous Variables in Weakly-Separable Triangular Models

We consider a model in which an outcome depends on two discrete treatment variables, where one treatment is given before the other. We formulate a three-equation triangular system with weak separability conditions. Without assuming assignment is random, we establish the identification of an average structural function using two-step matching. We also consider decomposing the effect of the first...

A Two Level Approximation Technique for Structural Optimization

This work presents a method for optimum design of structures, where the design variables can he considered as Continuous or discrete. The variables are chosen as sizing variables as well as coordinates of joints. The main idea is to reduce the number of structural analyses and the overal cost of optimization. In each design cycle, first the structural response quantities such as forces, displac...

Sharp identified sets for discrete variable IV models

Instrumental variable models for discrete outcomes are set, not point, identifying. The paper characterises identi…ed sets of structural functions when endogenous variables are discrete. Identi…ed sets are unions of large numbers of convex sets and may not be convex nor even connected. Each of the component sets is a projection of a convex set that resides in a much higher dimensional space ont...

Instrumental Variables Estimation of Nonparametric Models with Discrete Endogenous Regressors

This paper presents new instrumental variables estimators for nonparametric models with discrete endogenous regressors. The model speci cation is su ciently general to include structural models, triangular simultaneous equations and certain models of measurement error. Restricting the analysis to discrete endogenous regressors is an integral component of the analysis since a similar model with ...

Simultaneous equations models for discrete outcomes: coherence, completeness, and identication

This paper studies simultaneous equations models for two or more discrete outcomes. The models allow latent variables to be high dimensional and require latent variables and covariates to be independently distributed. The models may be incoherent, delivering no values of the outcomes at certain values of the latent variables and covariates. The models may be incomplete, delivering more than one...
