چکیده

Population ecology incorporates a variety of foundational tenets that aid in understanding community structure and biodiversity of organisms in the natural world. For example, it has been observed that increasing the habitat and environmental complexity is correlated with increasing species diversity (Rosenzweig, 1995). Lake Tanganyika, in central East Africa, represents an ideal system to test this canon. The rocky littoral zone of Lake Tanganyika supports a highly diverse ecosystem, including numerous species of the endemic gastropod clade Lavigeria. Although Lavigeria is the most common gastropod on the rock surfaces and the focal organism of several studies examining sedimentation, speciation, and predation, the diversity and abundance patterns of this species flock remain poorly understood (Michel et al., 2003).

Seasonal Variation of Earthworm Abundances and Biomass in Natural Forests and Plantations (North of Iran)

Soil productivity and plant growth are usually affected by biological activities of earthworms. The objective of this study was a comparative evaluation of earthworm abundances in 20-year-old plantations of Alder, Oak, Maple and Cypress with the adjacent natural mixed broad-leaved deciduous forest in the Caspian region of Iran. In this research one sample plot, each 1 ha; was selected in every ...

Indirect and direct effects of fish herbivory on nitrogen cycling in nearshore Lake Tanganyika Student: Brittany Graham Mentor: Peter McInytre

When external loading is small, as it is in Lake Tanganyika, the internal redistribution of nutrients can be important for ecosystem productivity. One conduit for this redistribution is fish. Research has been conducted on the transfer of nutrients into the pelagic or benthic ecosystems by benthic or pelagic fishes, respectively, but less attention has been paid to the recycling of nutrients by...

Investigating Paleoenvironmental Factors of Strait of Hormuz during the Holocene

The objective of this study is to understand the calcareous nannoplankton response to past environmental changes in the Strait of Hormuz during the Holocene. Calcareous nannoplankton is well abundant in the living phytoplankton community and a key component of the marine sediments. Due to its distinct reaction to environment changes and its good preservation potential, it is well suited for p...
