Evolution of self-incompatibility:

چکیده

Whitehouse (1950): 1. Sudden rise of angiosperms during the Cretaceous period (144-65 million years ago) was due to the development of barriers for self-pollination forcing the flowering plants to out breed and resulted genetic variations and rapid expansion of the angiosperms. 2. 70% of the angiosperms are hermophrodite species, while no more than 5% dioecious. Such a high proportion of hermophrodite species would not have evolved with out SI – dioecious plants would have advantages otherwise – more of those – which is not true. Thus, SI is an early event.

The Study of Morphological Traits and Identification of Self-incompatibility Alleles in Almond Cultivars and Genotypes

The evaluation of an almond collection using morphological variables and identification of self-incompatibility genotype  is useful for selecting pollinizers and for the design of crossing in almond breeding programs. In this study, important morphological traits and self-incompatibilities in 71 almond cultivars and genotypes were studied. Simple and multiplex specific PCR analyses were used in...

Correlated evolution of self and interspecific incompatibility across the range of a Texas wildflower

Plant species have repeatedly evolved recognition systems between pollen and pistils that identify and reject inappropriate matings. Two of the most important systems recognize self-pollen and interspecific pollen. Outstanding questions are whether and how these two recognition systems are linked and if this association could constrain the evolution of mate choice. Our study characterizes varia...

Comparative evidence for the correlated evolution of polyploidy and self-compatibility in Solanaceae.

Breakdown of self-incompatibility occurs repeatedly in flowering plants with important evolutionary consequences. In plant families in which self-incompatibility is mediated by S-RNases, previous evidence suggests that polyploidy may often directly cause self-compatibility through the formation of diploid pollen grains. We use three approaches to examine relationships between self-incompatibili...

Identification of Self- incompatibility Alleles in Some Almond Genotypes by Degenerate S-RNase Primers

The almond, Prunus dulcis Miller which belongs to Rosaceae family, is one of the most important commercial and oldest cultivated tree nut crops. Almonds are classified as a ‘nut’ in which the edible seed is the commercial product. Therefore, pollination and fertilization are necessary in almond. The characteristic of cultivated almond to express gametophytic self- incompatibility discourages se...

Tempo and mode in plant breeding system evolution.

Classic questions about trait evolution-including the directionality of character change and its interactions with lineage diversification-intersect in the study of plant breeding systems. Transitions from self-incompatibility to self-compatibility are frequent, and they may proceed within a species ("anagenetic" mode of breeding system change) or in conjunction with speciation events ("cladoge...
