SunScapes: extending the ‘solar envelopes’ concept through ‘iso-solar surfaces’

چکیده
This paper develops techniques to improve the concept of ‘solar envelopes’ and tests them on the Milan Trade Fair site, one of the largest real estate developments currently being carried out in Europe. The techniques are based on the image processing of very simple raster models of urban forms, called Digital Elevation Models (DEMs). Two questions are asked: could the new techniques simplify solar envelope calculations, making them more accessible in urban areas? Could they improve the meaning of solar envelopes with reference to the actual irradiation/illumination of the city? This paper shows that both answers are in the affirmative. The second question, in particular, is addressed by introducing the concept of ‘iso-solar surfaces’, extending the concept of solar envelope with energy considerations (two types of iso-solar surfaces can be distinguished: isosolar rights surfaces, and iso-solar collection surfaces). Iso-solar surfaces radically transform solar envelopes, making them more meaningful and immediate. They could become an easy tool to assess energy-saving strategies and could be used by policy makers and urban planners instead of coarse obstruction angle or similar bylaws. Sunscapes: 'Solar envelopes' and the analysis of urban DEMs
The aim of this paper is twofold: first, it simplifies ‘solar envelope’ calculations, making them easier to carry out over extensive urban areas; second, the proposed routines refine the definition of solar envelopes so that they reflect more accurately the actual irradiation of the city and make results directly applicable in urban planning. Both targets can be achieved if we use a new techniq...
متن کاملBest Orientation Determination of Buildings in Zanjan City Based on Solar Radiation
In recent years, high consumption of energy has become one of the major problems of world, especially in big cities. One of the solutions given for this situation is using solar energy as much as possible. If buildings are constructed in accordance with solar radiation and regional climate, they can absorb the lowest energy in hot and the most energy in cold periods; there will then be noticeab...
متن کاملOptimized Design and Feasibility of a Heating System with Energy Storage by Pebble Bed in a Solar Attic
For efficient application of solar energy, a pebble bed energy storage heating system in a solar attic is optimally designed and operated. To study the characteristics of the heating system, a numerical model for the system is presented and is validated with the experiment data in the literature. Based on the model, the influence of the envelopes of the solar house and the meteorological condit...
متن کاملEstimating and modeling monthly mean daily global solar radiation on horizontal surfaces using artificial neural networks
In this study, an artificial neural network based model for prediction of solar energy potential in Kerman province in Iran has been developed. Meteorological data of 12 cities for period of 17 years (1997–2013) and solar radiation for five cities around and inside Kerman province from the Iranian Meteorological Office data center were used for the training and testing the network. Meteorologic...
متن کاملEstimating Solar Radiation and Developing Iran’s Atlas Map of Optimum Monthly Tilt Angle (TECHNICAL NOTE)
Iran has great potential in utilizing solar energy. In order to maximize the amount of absorbed solar radiation to absorber surfaces, the surfaces should be installed at a suitable angle slope to the horizon that is discussed in this article. The calculations performed in this study was done using MATLAB software. In this study, radiation received on the ground in 31 provincial capitals of the ...
