Hilly Habitats and Highland Hydrology as Conservation Contexts
نویسندگان
چکیده
An approach to initial assessment of prospective needs for conservation of hill zones and scarps is formulated. The approach begins with a digital elevation model (DEM) and elevation contours generated from the DEM. Three types of hill/slope features are recognized for interactive extraction via geographic information system (GIS). The three types of features are regional ridges, dissected domes, and scarp slopes. The extraction is accomplished primarily by removal of contours representing short, slight slopes. The resulting terrain features are then appraised in terms of indicators of landscape ecological importance and partially prioritized for cooperative conservation.

Hydrological Effects of Different Soil Management Practices in Mediterranean Areas
In Mediterranean environment intensive agricultural activities are often practiced in steep slopes, where sometimes climatic, geomorphologic and land use factors (e.g. the high rainfall intensity, the scarce vegetal coverage, especially on the occasion of the early rainfalls, the low organic matter content of soils, etc.) worsen the impacts of soil erosion. In such contexts agriculture may play...
متن کاملPrehistoric human impact on rainforest biodiversity in highland New Guinea Published online
In the highlands of New Guinea, the development of agriculture as an indigenous innovation during the Early Holocene is considered to have resulted in rapid loss of forest cover, a decrease in forest biodiversity and increased land degradation over thousands of years. But how important is human activity in shaping the diversity of vegetation communities over millennial time-scales? An evaluatio...
متن کاملIdentifying suitable habitats for brown bear (Ursus arctos) in northern Zagros forests
Wildlife is an important biological indicator of viability of ecosystems, therefore, understanding habitat requirements of species is essential for biodiversity conservation. Determining the suitability of habitats for wildlife is important for effective management and conservation of species. The brown bear (Ursus arctos), as the largest carnivorous mammal in Iran, is distributed in most fores...

متن کاملEffect of swamp cultivation on distribution of anopheline larval habitats in Western Kenya.
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Malaria resurgence in highland regions of East Africa has been on increase. The spatio-temporal distribution of larval habitats of malaria vectors determines the distribution of adult vectors, hence, disease transmission. Vector's ecology is necessary for strategic vector control through effective plan for source reduction. Mapping of the larval habitats is necessary for...
