چکیده

In this work, we propose a method for self-organized adaptive task partitioning in a swarm of robots. Task partitioning refers to the decomposition of a task into less complex subtasks, which can then be tackled separately. Task partitioning can be observed in many species of social animals, where it provides several benefits for the group. Selforganized task partitioning in artificial swarm systems is currently not widely studied, although it has clear advantages in large groups. We propose a fully decentralized adaptive method that allows a swarm of robots to autonomously decide whether to partition a task into two sequential subtasks or not. The method is tested on a simulated foraging problem. We study the method’s performance in two different environments. In one environment the performance of the system is optimal when the foraging task is partitioned, in the other case when it is not. We show that by employing the method proposed in this paper, a swarm of autonomous robots can reach optimal performance in both environments.

Task Allocation in Swarm Robotics pdfsubject

In this work, we propose a method for self-organized task partitioning and allocation. The current state of the art provides neither an abstract understanding of task allocation problems in self-organized swarm systems, nor tools for modeling and designing such systems. We present the first steps towards a unified method capable of exactly this. We analyse the problem and provide a structured a...

An Extended Simulation of Complex Task Partitioning Method in a Self-organized Robotics Swarm

Interference and specially one of the most common kinds of it which is also known as physical interference, is among the most critical problems in terms of multi-robot cooperation. A simple way reducing interference is to make robots remain in unique work areas and move the objects to the next robot as soon as they intersect their areas’ borders. The problem of interference reduction, in this a...

Evolution of Task Partitioning in Swarm Robotics

Task-partitioning refers to the process whereby a task is divided into two or more sub-tasks. Through task partitioning both efficiency and effectiveness can be improved provided the right environmental conditions. We synthesize self-organized task partitioning behaviors for a swarm of mobile robots using artificial evolution. Through validation experiments, we show that the synthesized behavio...

Autonomous task partitioning in robot foraging: an approach based on cost estimation

We propose an approach for autonomous task partitioning in swarms of foraging robots. Task partitioning is the process of decomposing tasks into sub-tasks. Task partitioning impacts tasks execution and associated costs. Our approach is characterized by the use of a cost function, mapping the size of sub-tasks to the overall task cost. The robots model the cost function and use the model to sele...

Task Allocation Strategy for Time-Constrained Tasks in Robot Swarms

Task allocation is a key problem, which has a direct influence on the system performance in all kinds of distributed systems. This paper focuses on a specific kind of task allocation in swarm robotic systems, where the tasks are associated with specific time constraints. The paper presents a self-organized task allocation strategy, which aims to assign robot swarms to time-constrained tasks in ...
