Information fusion in navigation systems via factor graph based incremental smoothing

چکیده
This paper presents a new approach for high-rate information fusion in modern inertial navigation systems, that have a variety of sensors operating at different frequencies. Optimal information fusion corresponds to calculating the maximum a posteriori estimate over the joint probability distribution function (pdf) of all states, a computationally-expensive process in the general case. Our approach consists of two key components, which yields a exible, high-rate, near-optimal inertial navigation system. First, the joint pdf is represented using a graphical model, the factor graph, that fully exploits the system sparsity and provides a plug and play capability that easily accommodates the addition and removal of measurement sources. Second, an e cient incremental inference algorithm over the factor graph is applied, whose performance approaches the solution that would be obtained by a computationally-expensive batch optimization at a fraction of the computational cost. To further aid high-rate performance, we introduce an equivalent IMU factor based on a recently developed technique for IMU pre-integration, drastically reducing the number of states that must be added to the system. The proposed approach is experimentally validated using real IMU and imagery data that was recorded by a ground vehicle, and a statistical performance study is conducted in a simulated aerial scenario. A comparison to conventional xed-lag smoothing demonstrates that our method provides a considerably improved trade-o between computational complexity and performance.

Incremental Sensor Fusion in Factor Graphs with Unknown Delays
Sensor fusion by incremental smoothing in factor graphs allows the easy incorporation of asynchronous and delayed measurements, which is one of the main advantages of this approach compared to the ubiquitous filtering techniques. While incorporating delayed measurements into the factor graph representation is in principle easy when the delay is known, handling unknown delays is a non-trivial ta...

In this paper, we present the results of a hierarchical SLAM/GPS/INS/WLFP sensor fusion to be used in navigation system devices. Due to low quality of the inertial sensors, even a short-term GPS failure can lower the integrated navigation performance significantly. In addition, in GPS denied environments, most navigation systems need a separate assisting resource, in order to increase the avail...

متن کاملGraph-based distributed cooperative navigation for a general multi-robot measurement model
Cooperative navigation (CN) enables a group of cooperative robots to reduce their individual navigation errors. For a general multi-robot (MR) measurement model that involves both inertial navigation data and other onboard sensor readings, taken at different time instances, the various sources of information become correlated. Thus, this correlation should be solved for in the process of inform...
متن کاملAn Improved Multi-Sensor Fusion Navigation Algorithm Based on the Factor Graph
An integrated navigation system coupled with additional sensors can be used in the Micro Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (MUAV) applications because the multi-sensor information is redundant and complementary, which can markedly improve the system accuracy. How to deal with the information gathered from different sensors efficiently is an important problem. The fact that different sensors provide measu...
