Experimental evaluation of DOCSIS 1.1 upstream performance

چکیده
Data-Over-Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) is one of the many last mile technologies intended to provide Internet access and packet-based services to the customer. DOCSIS uses the widely deployed hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) network as the physical link between multiple cable modems (CMs) and the cable modem termination system (CMTS). This paper presents the upstream performance of DOCSIS 1.1 in the physical layer and MAC layer across various traffic patterns. The experiments are conducted on real devices and not simulators as used in all previous research. The use of real devices allows us to capture the complete complexity of the protocol, and gives us realistic results but it also limits our control over different parameters. The goal of the project is to study the impact of different parameters that can be controlled by the cable service provider and to compare different CMs with respect to upstream performance. The performance metrics used are upstream data rate and channel utilization. The results can be used by the cable operators to optimize their networks, by the CM and CMTS manufacturers to enhance their products and they may help in identifying protocol bottlenecks for upstream performance.

On the Performance Modelling and Optimisation of DOCSIS HFC Networks
The DOCSIS protocol defines the MAC and physical layer operations governing two-way transmission of voice, video and multimedia data over HFC cable networks, thus constituting a complex system with many interdependent parameters. This tutorial employs simulation and analytic methodologies for the performance modelling and optimisation of DOCSIS 1.1/2.0 HFC networks with particular focus on the ...
متن کاملModeling the DOCSIS 1.1/2.0 MAC protocol
We have developed a model of the Data over Cable (DOCSIS) version 1.1/2.0 MAC and physical layers using the ‘ns’ simulation package. In this paper we present the results of a performance analysis that we have conducted using the model. The main objective of our study is to examine the performance impact of several key MAC layer system parameters as traffic loads are varied. We focus on the DOCS...
متن کاملTransient analysis of DOCSIS 1.1 cable modem networks
In this paper we seek to identify the primary factors that determine the time-to-recovery of a network of DOCSIS-compliant cable modems (CM's). DOCSIS, which stands for Data-Over-Cable Service Interface Speci cations [6], is an emerging industry standard for data services over the cable TV infrastructure. According to the speci cation, individual cable modems must compete for access to the upst...
متن کاملThe Interaction Between the DOCSIS 1.1/2.0 MAC Protocol and TCP Application Performance
The deployment of data-over-cable broadband Internet access continues to unfold throughout the world. While there are competing technologies, the Data over Cable (DOCSIS) 1.1/2.0 effort is emerging as the single standard. There has been little research exploring the impact that the DOCSIS 1.1/2.0 MAC and physical layers has on the performance of Internet applications. We have developed a model ...
متن کاملA Tutorial on DOCSIS: Protocol and Performance Models
Since the first community antenna television (CATV) system was deployed in 1948, cable technology has advanced at an astounding rate. Today, multiple service providers (MSOs) are competing with telephone companies to deliver the long sought ‘triple play’ of voice, video and data to residential and business premises. Upstream data rates have progressed from dial-up speeds to 10Mbps and to 100s o...
