Neoclassical Plateau Regime Transport in a Tokamak Pedestal
نویسندگان
چکیده
In subsonic tokamak pedestals the radial scale of plasma profiles can be comparable to the ion poloidal Larmor radius, thereby making the radial electrostatic field so strong that the E × B drift has to be retained in the ion kinetic equation in the same order as the parallel streaming. The modifications of neoclassical plateau regime transport – such as the ion heat flux, and the poloidal ion and impurity flows – are evaluated in the presence of a strong radial electric field. The altered poloidal ion flow can lead to a significant increase in the bootstrap current in the pedestal where the spatial profile variation is strong because of the enhanced coefficient of the ion temperature gradient term near the electric field minimum. Unlike the banana regime, orbit squeezing does not affect the plateau regime results.

A unified treatment of kinetic effects in a tokamak pedestal
We consider the effects of a finite pedestal radial electric field on ion orbits using a unified approach. We then employ these modified orbit results to retain finite E×B drift departures from flux surfaces in an improved drift kinetic equation. The procedure allows us to make clear distinction between transit averages and flux surface averages when solving this kinetic equation. The technique...
متن کاملKinetic Effects in the Pedestal of a Tokamak
We consider the effects of finite ExB on the residual and neoclassical ion heat transport and ion flow in the pedestal. For a tokamak pedestal with a density scale of the poloidal ion gyroradius the finite ExB drift modfies the ion orbits, moving the trapped-passing boundary towards the tail of the ion distribution function. Introduction In many tokamak plasmas the width of the pedestal is obse...
متن کاملEnhancement of the bootstrap current in a tokamak pedestal.
The strong radial electric field in a subsonic tokamak pedestal modifies the neoclassical ion parallel flow velocity, as well as the radial ion heat flux. Existing experimental evidence of the resulting alteration in the poloidal flow of a trace impurity is discussed. We then demonstrate that the modified parallel ion flow can noticeably enhance the pedestal bootstrap current when the backgroun...
متن کاملZonal flow in a tokamak pedestal
Neoclassical shielding is the dominant mechanism reducing the collisionless zonal flow in a tokamak. Previously, this phenomenon was analyzed in the case of an essentially homogeneous equilibrium since the wavelength of the zonal flow perturbation was assumed to be much less than the scale length of background plasma parameters. This assumption is not appropriate in a tokamak pedestal. Therefor...
متن کاملRole of Transport and MHD Stability in Simulations of H-mode Pedestal Development in ELMy Plasmas
This study addresses the development of a scaling of the H-mode pedestal in tokamak plasmas with type I ELMs. In particular, the scaling studies carried out illustrate the dependence of the pedestal properties and the resulting divertor heat load width as a function of plasma elongation and plasma current. H-mode pedestal profiles for DIII-D and Alcator C-Mod tokamaks are considered: DIII-D for...
