Galaxy Disruption as the Origin of Intracluster Light in the Coma Cluster

چکیده

Although the existence of a faint background of starlight in the core of the Coma cluster has been well established, its origin is uncertain. This vast sea of stars could have formed outside the galaxies, using gas left over from the time of the cluster’s birth. Alternatively, it might be the accumulated debris generated by interactions between the galaxies over the lifetime of the cluster. Here we report the discovery of three large, low surface brightness features in the Coma cluster; the most spectacular is a plume-like structure, 130 kpc long, in the cluster’s heart. These structures will disperse over the next one to two billion years, thereby enhancing the general background light. If this epoch is typical, we argue that a significant fraction – perhaps even most – of the intracluster light results from a steady accumulation of tidal debris generated during galaxy-galaxy and galaxy-cluster interactions.

On the Origin of Faint Intracluster Starlight in Coma

Using N-body numerical simulations, we examine possible mechanisms for the origin of the intracluster starlight features recently discovered in the Coma cluster of galaxies. We show that tidal interactions of a “normal” elliptical galaxy with a symmetrically distributed dark matter potential do not produce the observed intracluster starlight features. A head-on collision of two normal elliptica...

Dwarf Galaxies in the Coma Cluster . II . Photometry and Analysis

We use the data set derived in our previous paper (Secker & Harris 1997) to study the dwarf galaxy population in the central ≃ 700 arcmin of the Coma cluster, the majority of which are early-type dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies. Analysis of the statistically-decontaminated dE galaxy sequence in the color-magnitude diagram reveals that the mean dE color at R = 18.0 mag is (B − R) ≃ 1.4 mag, but t...

Far - infrared emission of intracluster dust in the Coma galaxy cluster ?

The ISOPHOT C200 camera aboard ISO has been used to observe the extended far infrared (FIR) emission from the Coma cluster of galaxies. Two scans with 48′ length across the cluster, each at 120 μm and 185 μm, were obtained at crossing position angles. The profiles of the surface brightness ratio I120μm/I185μm along the two scans are quite similar in showing an enhanced 120 μm emission within th...

The effect of dwarf galaxy disruption in semi-analytic models

We present results for a galaxy formation model that includes a simple treatment for the disruption of dwarf galaxies by gravitational forces and galaxy encounters within galaxy clusters. This is implemented a posteriori in a semi-analytic model by considering the stability of cluster dark matter subhaloes at z = 0. We assume that a galaxy whose dark matter substructure has been disrupted will ...
