Polymolecularity and Polydispersity in Molecular Weight Determinations

چکیده
The influence of polymolecularity on molecular weight determinations is reviewed. Several molecular weight methods give so-called mixed averages, i.e. averages which are based on more than one moment of the molecular weight distribution or on powers of the moment. Molecular weight averages can be subdivided into simple, exponential resolved, order resolved and power resolved averages. Mixed averages depend on the shape of the solute and its interaction with the solvent. Simple averages of molecular weight can be calculated from combinations of averages of different properties with the help of the H-theorem. A related problem is that of the so-called polymolecularity corrections. New experiments show a definite influence of the type and the width of the molecular weight distribution on the second osmotic virial coefficients which is not predicted by present theories. Methods are given to distinguish between open, closed, molecule-based and segment-based associations. The influence of the polymolecularity of unimers on the polydispersity of the resulting multimers is discussed for several types of association. In general, a sharpening effect is observed. Equations are given which may help detect polydispersity in open and closed association. Debye's treatment of micellar solutions cannot be used to determine premicellar equilibria.

Polymer Characterization: Polymer Molecular Weight Determination
Polymers are large molecules consisting of a large number of small component molecules chemically linked together. They are made from constituent monomers through polymerization process. Polymers are unique materials in that they consist of a statistical distribution of chains of varying lengths, and each chain consists of monomer residues which affect its properties hence they require several ...
متن کاملPreparation of Water-Based Alkyd/Acrylic Hybrid Resins
Alkyd resins are amongst the most important and widely used resins in coating sectors. In this communication we report on preparation of alkyd resins emulsified by grafted acrylic resins on their fatty acid moieties. Both high-shear mechanical homogenizer and ultra-sonic sonicator were used step-wise to disperse the alkyd resin and acrylic based monomers in aqueous media. The resins are of nano...
متن کاملFlow-induced polymer degradation during ink-jet printing.
We report for the first time evidence of flow-induced polymer degradation during inkjet printing for both poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and polystyrene (PS) in good solvent. This has significance for the deposition of functional and biological materials. Polymers having Mw either less than 100 kDa or greater than approximately 1,000 kDa show no evidence of molecular weight degradation. The l...
متن کاملPolydispersity-induced macrophase separation in diblock copolymer melts.
The effect of A-block polydispersity on the phase behavior of AB-diblock copolymer melts is examined using a complete self-consistent field theory treatment that allows for fractionation of the parent molecular-weight distribution. In addition to observing the established shift in phase boundaries, we find the emergence of significant two-phase coexistence regions causing, for instance, the dis...
متن کاملEngineering of stable recombinant bacteria for production of chiral medium-chain-length poly-3-hydroxyalkanoates.
In order to scale up medium-chain-length polyhydroxyalkanoate (mcl-PHA) production in recombinant microorganisms, we generated and investigated different recombinant bacteria containing a stable regulated expression system for phaC1, which encodes one of the mcl-PHA polymerases of Pseudomonas oleovorans. We used the mini-Tn5 system as a tool to construct Escherichia coli 193MC1 and P. oleovoran...
