Assessing and Redesigning Enterprise Networks through NS-2 to Support VoIP

چکیده
In the recent past, Voice over IP (VoIP) deployments over data networks are gaining popularity due to the massive growth in the broadband internet access. Successful deployment of these applications depends directly on the performance of the underlying data network. Based on this and the fact that today’s data networks are operated to perform many significant applications, network administrators seek out a way to measure the impact of these applications on the existing network performance before deploying them. Occasionally, network redesign is necessity; considering redesign’s alterations should preserve most of the existing network characteristics to reduce overall impact of deploying new applications in the network performance. In this paper, we evaluated readiness of the existing enterprise network through NS-2 to support VoIP and based on findings a solution for redesigning the enterprise network is proposed to enhance the new network performance and leaving sufficient capacity for future growth. We applied our approach on a medium size enterprise network as a case study, the results prove improvements in network performance after redesigning the existing enterprise network.

Layer-2 network topology discovery has become critical for areas of multimedia network management. For example, the topology can be used to help locate areas of congestion or to find the path between a pair of hosts (e.g., a pair experiencing poor VoIP performance). Little work is available for automatically finding the layer-2 topology of such networks. This paper presents an approach to find ...

متن کاملEnd-to-end delay analysis for small/medium scale IP networks
Analysis of multiplexers with a small number of input traffic streams is appropriate considering the emergence of Voice over IP (VoIP) that is now ubiquitous in Enterprise networks. It is suggested in the literature that VoIP switches designed to cater for small/medium-sized enterprises (SME) may have as few as 8 input traffic streams [VEGA2000]. These new small switches illustrate a shift in t...

Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) are seen as a means to provide last mile connections in Next Generation Networks (NGNs). Because of their auto configuration capabilities and the low deployment cost WMNs are considered to be an efficient solution for the support of multiple voice, video and data services in NGNs. This paper looks at the optimal provision of resources in WMNs for Voice over IP (VoI...
