Theory and Modeling for the Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission

چکیده
The Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission will provide measurement capabilities, which will exceed those of earlier and even contemporary missions by orders of magnitude. MMS will, for the first time, be able to measure directly and with sufficient resolution key features of the magnetic reconnection process, down to the critical electron scales, which need to be resolved to understand how reconnection works. Results from Navigator GPS Flight Testing for the Magnetospheric MultiScale Mission
The recent delivery of the first Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) Navigator Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers to the Magnetospheric MultiScale (MMS) mission spacecraft is a high water mark crowning a decade of research and development in high-altitude space-based GPS. Preceding MMS delivery, the engineering team had developed receivers to support multiple missions and mission studies,...
متن کاملNew electric field in asymmetric magnetic reconnection.
We present a theory and numerical evidence for the existence of a previously unexplored in-plane electric field in collisionless asymmetric magnetic reconnection. This electric field, dubbed the "Larmor electric field," is associated with finite Larmor radius effects and is distinct from the known Hall electric field. Potentially, it could be an important indicator for the upcoming Magnetospher...
متن کاملMultiscale Analysis of Transverse Cracking in Cross-Ply Laminated Beams Using the Layerwise Theory
A finite element model based on the layerwise theory is developed for the analysis of transverse cracking in cross-ply laminated beams. The numerical model is developed using the layerwise theory of Reddy, and the von Kármán type nonlinear strain field is adopted to accommodate the moderately large rotations of the beam. The finite element beam model is verified by comparing the present numeric...
متن کاملInvestigation of Vacancy Defects on the Young’s Modulus of Carbon Nanotube Reinforced Composites in Axial Direction via a Multiscale Modeling Approach
In this article, the influence of various vacancy defects on the Young’s modulus of carbon nanotube (CNT) - reinforcement polymer composite in the axial direction is investigated via a structural model in ANSYS software. Their high strength can be affected by the presence of defects in the nanotubes used as reinforcements in practical nanocomposites. Molecular structural mechanics (MSM)/finite ...
متن کاملGlobal and multiscale aspects of magnetospheric dynamics in local-linear filters
[1] The magnetospheric dynamics consists of global and multiscale components. The local-linear filters (LLFs) relating the solar wind input and the magnetospheric output have been used earlier to predict the global dynamical behavior. In this paper, the relative role of global and multiscale processes in the prediction of magnetospheric dynamics is studied. The filters are derived from the reco...
