French evaluative prefixes in translation: From automatic alignment to semantic categorization

چکیده
Evaluative morphology (esp. augmentatives and diminutives) has been extensively discussed in the field of morphological typology (see e.g. Stump, 1993; Bauer, 1997; Grandi & Montermini, 2005; Körtvélyessy & Stekauer, 2011). Corpus-based descriptions of evaluative morphology, however, are still sorely lacking for many languages, including French. A first attempt at an exhaustive inventory and general discussion of French evaluative prefixation is found in Fradin & Montermini (2009) (in addition to prefixation, it also deals with the -ET suffixation). One of the important insights offered by Fradin & Montermini’s overview is that in French, like in many other languages, evaluative prefixes can be classified along the following two dimensions (see Wierzbicka, 1991; Grandi, 2002; the sub-categories are taken from Guilbert, 1971: L and Cartoni, 2008: 287291):

Evaluative prefixes in translation: From automatic alignment to semantic categorization
This article aims to assess to what extent translation can shed light on the semantics of French evaluative prefixation by adopting Noël (2003)’s ‘translations as evidence for semantics’ approach. In French, evaluative prefixes can be classified along two dimensions (cf. (Fradin and Montermini 2009)): (1) a quantity dimension along a maximum/minimum axis and the semantic values big and small, a...
متن کاملInvestigating Translation Strategies of Culture-Specific Items in Alignment with Nord’s Binary Translation Typology: A Case Study of Unaccustomed Earth
Culture is an extremely complex concept. متن کاملAutomatic Construction of Persian ICT WordNet using Princeton WordNet
WordNet is a large lexical database of English language, in which, nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs are grouped into sets of cognitive synonyms (synsets). Each synset expresses a distinct concept. Synsets are interlinked by both semantic and lexical relations. WordNet is essentially used for word sense disambiguation, information retrieval, and text translation. In this paper, we propose s...
متن کاملSemantic and Contextual Knowledge Representation for Lexical Disambiguation: Case of Arabic-French Query Translation
We present in this paper, an automatic query translation system in cross-language information retrieval (ArabicFrench). For the lexical disambiguation, our system combines between two resources: a bilingual dictionary and a parallel corpus. To select the best translation, our method is based on a correspondence measure between two semantic networks. The first one represents the senses of ambigu...
متن کاملAutomatic Annotation of Direct Reported Speech in Arabic and French, According to a Semantic Map of Enunciative Modalities
We present an analysis of the linguistic markers of the enunciative modalities in direct reported speech, in a multilingual framework concerning Arabic and French. Furthermore, we present a platform for automatic annotation of semantic relations, based on the Contextual Exploration method. This platform allows the automatic annotation and categorisation of quotational segments in both languages...
