Vesicles and onion phases in dilute surfactant solutions

چکیده
We study theoretically the stability of phases of unilamellar and multilamellar vesicles in bilayer-forming surfactant solutions. It is argued that these are likely to arise, instead of a bicontinuous "sponge" phase, when the elastic constants of the bilayer are chosen so that the curvature energy of a sphere is small. At very low volume fractions we predict a phase of noninteracting vesicles; as the concentration is increased these reach an overlap threshold, beyond which "nesting" can occur, giving a multilamellar vesicle or "onion" phase. At higher concentration still, a transition to the smectic (La) phase is predicted. This transition

Dilute and concentrated phases of vesicles at thermal equilibrium
A quatemary system made of an ionic surfactant (SDS), octanol, water and sodium chloride has been investigated. We present experimental results that demonstrate the existence of a phase of vesicles at thermal equilibrium. We show that vesicles can be prepared both in a dilute regime leading to an isotropic liquid phase of low viscosity and in a concentrated regime leading to a phase of close pa...
متن کاملEquilibrium Onions ?
– We demonstrate the possibility of a stable equilibrium multi-lamellar (“onion”) phase in pure lamellar systems (no excess solvent) due to a sufficiently negative Gaussian curvature modulus. The onion phase is stabilized by non-linear elastic moduli coupled to a polydisperse size distribution (Apollonian packing) to allow space-filling without appreciable elastic distortion. This model is comp...
متن کاملA Novel Method with Dilute Surfactant Flooding by Considering the Effect of Time and Temperature on Crude Oil Aging, Experimental Study on Heavy Oil of Bangestan
Wettability alteration has been a sophisticated issue for scientists and reservoir engineers since early 20th century; thus, many investigations have been carried out to determine wettability and enhance it to ideal conditions, which leads to improvement in oil recovery. Dilute surfactant flooding has been approved as one of the noteworthy methods in chemical flooding. Several petroleum reservo...
متن کاملSpontaneous onion shape vesicle formation and fusion of comb-like block copolymers studied by dissipative particle dynamics
A dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulation is performed to investigate the spontaneous onion shape vesicle formation and fusion of A6(B2)3 type comb-like block copolymers with a semiflexible hydrophobic backbone. Our results show that comb-like block copolymers of A6(B2)3 type may be a good candidate for onion shape vesicle formation. The spontaneous fusion dynamics between the onion shap...
