Separating Bi-Chromatic Points by Parallel Lines

چکیده
Given a 2-coloring of the vertices of a regular n-gon P , how many parallel lines are needed to separate the vertices into monochromatic subsets? We prove that bn/2c is a tight upper bound, and also provide anO(n log n) time algorithm to determine the direction that gives the minimum number of lines. If the polygon is a non-regular convex polygon, then n − 3 lines may be necessary, while n − 2 lines always suffice. This problem arises in machine learning and has implications about the representational capabilities of some neural networks.

On the Chromatic Number of Subsets of the Euclidean Plane
The chromatic number of a subset of the real plane is the smallest number of colors assigned to the elements of that set such that no two points at distance 1 receive the same color. It is known that the chromatic number of the plane is between 4 and 7. In this note, we determine the bounds on the chromatic number for several classes of subsets of the plane such as extensions of the rational pl...
متن کاملSeparating points by axis-parallel lines
We study the problem of separating n points in the plane, no two of whi h have the same xor yoordinate, using a minimum number of verti al and horizontal lines avoiding the points, so that ea h ell of the subdivision ontains at most one point. Extending previous NP-hardness results due to Freimer et al. we prove that this problem and some variants of it are APX-hard. We give a 2-approximation a...
متن کاملBi-chromatic minimum spanning trees
Let G be a set of disjoint bi-chromatic straight line segments and H be a set of red and blue points in the plane, no three points are collinear. We give tight upper bounds on the maximum degree of a node in the color conforming minimum weight spanning tree (MST) formed by G and H. We also consider bounds on the total length of the edges of 1) the planar MST and the unrestricted MST, 2) the gre...
متن کاملOn the Parameterized Complexity of Red-Blue Points Separation
We study the following geometric separation problem: Given a set R of red points and a set B of blue points in the plane, find a minimum-size set of lines that separate R from B. We show that, in its full generality, parameterized by the number of lines k in the solution, the problem is unlikely to be solvable significantly faster than the brute-force nO(k)-time algorithm, where n is the total ...
متن کاملBI-OBJECTIVE OPTIMIZATION OF RESERVOIR OPERATION BY MULTI-STEP PARALLEL CELLULAR AUTOMATA
Parallel Cellular Automata (PCA) previously has been employed for optimizing bi-objective reservoir operation, where one release is used to meet both objectives. However, if a single release can only be used for one objective, meaning two separate sets of releases are needed, the method is not applicable anymore. In this paper, Multi-Step Parallel Cellular Automata (MSPCA) has been developed fo...
