A saddle point least squares approach to mixed methods
نویسندگان
چکیده
We investigate new PDE discretization approaches for solving variational formulations with different types of trial and test spaces. The general mixed formulation we consider assumes a stability LBB condition and a data compatibility condition at the continuous level. We expand on the Bramble-Pasciak’s least square formulation for solving such problems by providing new ways to choose approximation spaces and new iterative processes to solve the discrete formulations. Our proposed method has the advantage that a discrete inf − sup condition is automatically satisfied by natural choices of test spaces (first) and corresponding trial spaces (second). In addition, for the proposed iterative solver, a nodal basis for the trial space is not required. Applications of the new approach include discretization of first order systems of PDEs, such as div− curl systems and time-hamonic Maxwell equations.

Improving the Solution of Least Squares Support Vector Machines with Application to a Blast Furnace System
The solution of least squares support vector machines LS-SVMs is characterized by a specific linear system, that is, a saddle point system. Approaches for its numerical solutions such as conjugate methods Sykens and Vandewalle 1999 and null space methods Chu et al. 2005 have been proposed. To speed up the solution of LS-SVM, this paper employs the minimal residual MINRES method to solve the abo...
متن کاملA Least Squares Approach to Estimating the Average Reservoir Pressure
Least squares method (LSM) is an accurate and rapid method for solving some analytical and numerical problems. This method can be used to estimate the average reservoir pressure in well test analysis. In fact, it may be employed to estimate parameters such as permeability (k) and pore volume (Vp). Regarding this point, buildup, drawdown, late transient test data, modified Muskat method, interfe...
متن کاملAn efficient method to reconstruct invariant manifolds of saddle points
In vector field analysis, saddle points have two different types of invariant manifolds, namely stable ones and unstable ones. The invariant manifolds represent separatrices that partition the domain of trajectories into invariant regions of different dynamics. In this work, we analyze the basins of attraction of two different stable nodes by reconstructing the separatrices of a saddle point. T...
متن کاملAn Augmented Lagrangian Method for Identifying Discontinuous Parameters in Elliptic Systems
The identification of discontinuous parameters in elliptic systems is formulated as a constrained minimization problem combining the output least squares and the equation error method. The minimization problem is then proved to be equivalent to the saddle-point problem of an augmented Lagrangian. The finite element method is used to discretize the saddle-point problem, and the convergence of th...
متن کاملA Negative - Norm Least Squares Method for Plates
In this paper a least squares method, using the minus one norm developed in 6] and 7], is introduced to approximate the solution of the Reissner-Mindlin plate problem with small parameter t, the thickness of the plate. The reformulation of Brezzi and Fortin is employed to prevent locking. Taking advantage of the least squares approach, we use only continuous nite elements for all the unknowns. ...
