Parametric instability in dark molecular clouds

چکیده
Received ; accepted – 2 – ABSTRACT The present work investigates the parametric instability of parallel propagating circularly polarized Alfvén (pump) waves in a weakly ionized molecular cloud. It is shown that the relative drift between the plasma particles gives rise to the Hall effect resulting in the modified pump wave characteristics. Although the linearized fluid equations with periodic coefficients are difficult to solve analytically, it is shown that a linear transformation can remove the periodic dependence. The resulting linearized equations with constant coefficients are used to derive an algebraic dispersion relation. The growth rate of the parametric instability is a sensitive function of the amplitude of the pump wave as well as to the ratio of the pump and the modified dust-cyclotron frequencies. The instability is insensitive to the plasma β. The results are applied to the molecular clouds.

Evidence for a Molecular Cloud Origin for Gamma-Ray Bursts: Implications for the Nature of Star Formation in the Universe
It appears that the majority of rapidly-, well-localized gamma-ray bursts with undetected, or dark, optical afterglows, or ‘dark bursts’ for short, occur in clouds of size R ∼> 10L 1/2 49 pc and mass M ∼> 3× 10 L49 M⊙, where L is the isotropic-equivalent peak luminosity of the optical flash. We show that clouds of this size and mass cannot be modeled as a gas that is bound by pressure equilibri...
متن کاملJeans instability of interstellar gas clouds in the background of weakly interacting massive particles
Criterion of the Jeans instability of interstellar gas clouds which are gravitationally coupled with weakly interacting massive particles is revisited. It is established that presence of the dark matter always reduces the Jeans length, and in turn, Jeans mass of the interstellar gas clouds. Astrophysical implications of this effect are discussed. Subject headings: dark matter — gravitation — in...
متن کاملMolecular dark matter in galaxies
Context. Clouds containing molecular dark matter in quantities relevant for star formation may exist in minihaloes of the type of cold dark matter included in many cosmological simulations or in the regions of some galaxies extending far beyond their currently known boundaries. Aims. We have systematically explored parameter space to identify conditions under which plane-parallel clouds contain...
متن کاملBright and dark solitary waves in the presence of third-harmonic generation
We analyze the effect of phase-matched third-harmonic generation on the existence and stability of (1 1 1)-dimensional bright and dark spatial solitary waves in optical media with a cubic (or Kerr) nonlinear response. We demonstrate that parametric coupling of the fundamental beam with the third harmonic leads to the existence of two-color solitary waves resembling those in a x (2) medium and t...
متن کاملPolytropes: Implications for Molecular Clouds and Dark Matter
Molecular clouds are supported against their own self-gravity by several different sources of pressure: thermal pressure, mean magnetic pressure, and turbulent pressure. Multi-pressure polytropes, in which each of these pressures is proportional to a power of the density, can account for many of the observed properties of molecular clouds. The agreement with observation can be improved with com...
