Algorithms for the global design of WDM networks including the traffic grooming

چکیده
In this paper, we propose a model and algorithms for the global design problem of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks including the traffic grooming. This problem consists in finding the number of fibres between each pair of nodes (i.e. the physical topology), finding the number of transponders at each node, choosing the set of lightpaths (i.e. the virtual topology), routing these lightpaths over the physical topology and, finally, grooming and routing the traffic over the lightpaths. Since this problem is NP-hard, we propose two heuristic algorithms and a tabu search metaheuristic algorithm to find solutions for real-size instances within a reasonable amount of computational time. c © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Effective traffic grooming in WDM rings
Much work has focused on traffic grooming in WDM ring networks. Previous work has considered many aspects of traffic grooming, including minimizing number of ADMs, minimizing number of wavelengths, single hub and multiple hub architectures, switching capabilities etc. In this work, we derive general and tighter bounds on the number of wavelengths in WDM ring networks that may be capable of swit...
متن کاملAnt Colony Optimization Metaheuristic for the Traffic Grooming in WDM Networks
This paper studies the routing strategy in non-bifurcated traffic grooming in WDM networks. It is to optimally route the specified traffic over a given logical topology to minimize the congestion of the WDM network. We first present the node-arc formulation. To overcome the computational complexity by implementing exact algorithms, we present an ant colony optimization (ACO) metaheuristic. The ...
متن کاملHierarchical traffic grooming: A tutorial
Traffic grooming is concerned with the design, operation, and control of networks with multigranular bandwidth demands. As the number of resources in a multigranular network increases rapidly with the network size, wavelength capacity, and load, a scalable framework for managing these entities becomes essential. Hierarchical traffic grooming facilitates the control and management of multigranul...
متن کاملDynamic traffic grooming algorithms for reconfigurable SONET over WDM networks - Global Telecommunications Conference, 2002. GLOBECOM '02. IEEE
Most of today's optical networks are built on E:ONET rings [I]. Using WDM technology, multiple rings can be sup ported on a single fiber ring [3]. In this architecture, each wavelength independently carries a SONET ring. Each SONET ring can further support multiple low speed streams (e.g. an OC48 SONET ring can support 4 OC-12 or 16 OC-3 streams at the same time). At each node a WDM Add/Drop Mu...
متن کاملDynamic Traffic Grooming using Fixed-Alternate Routing in WDM Mesh Optical Networks
There is a mismatch between lightpath channel capacity and traffic request capacity in wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) optical mesh networks. Traffic grooming is needed to resolve this mismatch in an efficient way. We study the dynamic traffic grooming problem in WDM mesh networks using the fixed-alternate routing (FAR) approach. Based on the FAR approach, we propose the fixed-order groom...
