Cluster Formation of Clay-like Colloids in Shear Flow

چکیده
In Al2O3 suspensions, depending on the experimental conditions very different microstructures can be found, comprising fluid like suspensions, a repulsive structure, and a clustered microstructure. For technical processing in ceramics, the knowledge of the microstructure is of big importance, since it essentially determines the stability of a workpiece to be produced. To enlighten this topic, we investigate these suspensions by means of a coupled Stochastic Rotation Dynamics (SRD) and Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation. In the present paper we utilize the structure factor and the pair correlation function as analysis tools to observe cluster formation. The first one observes on the length scale of the system size, whereas the latter focuses on short discances to the nearest neighbours. Both observation tools show good agreement among each other. The repulsive microstructure can be identified by means of the mean squared displacement of the particles. The results from different evaluation tools are summarized in a stability diagram. Population-balance description of shear-induced clustering, gelation and suspension viscosity in sheared DLVO colloids.
Application of shear flow to charge-stabilized aqueous colloidal suspensions is ubiquitous in industrial applications and as a means to achieve controlled field-induced assembly of nanoparticles. Yet, applying shear flow to a charge-stabilized colloidal suspension, which is initially monodisperse and in quasi-equilibrium leads to non-trivial clustering phenomena (and sometimes to a gelation tra...

We investigate the shear-induced structure formation of colloidal particles dissolved in non-Newtonian fluids by means of computer simulations. The two investigated visco-elastic fluids are a semi-dilute polymer solution and a worm-like micellar solution. Both shear-thinning fluids contain long flexible chains whose entanglements appear and disappear continually as a result of Brownian motion a...

We have systematically investigated the phase diagram of clay particles in water to understand the relation between the local and macroscopic properties and the structures of clay suspensions. We focused, in particular, on sodium Cloisite (CNa) particles at concentrations typically used in nanocomposites (concentrations from 1 to 4 wt %) and at an extended range of ionic strengths (10(-5) to 10...

Dense suspensions of small strongly interacting particles are complex systems, which are rarely understood on the microscopic level. We investigate properties of dense suspensions and sediments of small spherical Al2O3 particles in a shear cell by means of a combined Molecular Dynamics (MD) and Stochastic Rotation Dynamics (SRD) simulation. We study structuring effects and the dependence of the...
متن کاملShear-induced structure in polymer-clay nanocomposite solutions.
The equilibrium structure and shear response of model polymer-clay nanocomposite gels are measured using X-ray scattering, light scattering, optical microscopy, and rheometry. The suspensions form physical gels via the "bridging" of neighboring colloidal clay platelets by the polymer, with reversible adsorption of polymer segments onto the clay surface providing a short-range attractive force. ...
