چکیده

Although the Biot-Gassmann equations are known to predict acoustic data for water-saturated glass bead packings very well, these equations often seem to give anomalous results for naturally occurring rocks. The theory shows that, as the compressibility of the pore uid increases, the inverse of the coeecients C and M in Biot's equations should increase linearly, and the theory also gives deenite predictions about the values of the slope and intercept of the resulting lines. Although the anticipated linear behavior is observed in real data, the values of the slopes are smaller than expected for some rocks. Therefore, the process of inverting this data for the desired coeecients must incorporate other physical constraints and then produces, not a single value but rather, a range of possible values for each coeecient.

Deriving Biot-Gassmann relationship by inclusion-based method

The quasi-static theory of poroelasticity presented by Biot and Gassmann provides a relationship between the drained and undrained elastic constants of an isotropic fluid-saturated porous material in terms of the porosity of the material, bulk modulus of the solid grains, and bulk modulus of the pore fluid. We have developed an alternative approach to derive the Biot-Gassmann (BG) relationship ...

Coarsening of solid-liquid mixtures in a random acceleration eld

The eeects of ow induced by a random acceleration eld (g-jitter) are considered in two related situations that are of interest for microgravity uid experiments: the random motion of isolated buoyant particles, and diiusion driven coarsening of a solid-liquid mixture. We start by analyzing in detail actual accelerometer data gathered during a recent microgravity mission, and obtain the values of...

Theory of frequency dependent acoustics in patchy-saturated porous media

The theory of the dynamic bulk modulus, K̃(v), of a porous rock, whose saturation occurs in patches of 100% saturation each of two different fluids, is developed within the context of the quasi-static Biot theory. The theory describes the crossover from the Biot–Gassmann–Woods result at low frequencies to the Biot–Gassmann–Hill result at high. Exact results for the approach to the low and the hi...

Equations of motion for isotropic porous mediawith multiple solid constituentsJames

The volume averaging technique for obtaining macroscopic equations of motion for materials that are microscopically inhomogeneous is extended to the situation in which multiple solid constituents form a porous matrix while a uniform uid lls the pores. Previous volume averaging eeorts of Pride et al. (1992) and others have concentrated on single solid constituent porous media. The analysis for m...
