چکیده

We have developed and demonstrated 3D imaging for contraband detection using a submillimeter-wave frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar with a fast microwave chirp and phase coherent detection. The technique provides an important advantage over more traditional CW RF imaging because of the ability to time-gate the return signals. This can be used to discern specific objects by greatly reducing clutter from unwanted targets or specular reflections. The prototype system uses a 600 GHz RF signal with a 28.8 GHz chirp producing a 2.3 MHz/μsec sweep yielding a range resolution of approximately 0.6 cm or less. Lateral resolution on the scene is set by a 40 cm diameter reflector producing approximately 0.5 cm at 4 m distance.

Resolution improvement techniques for microwave imaging in random media using small wideband adaptive arrays

In this work we review and extend the approach for radar imaging using small, wideband, adaptive arrays by using a ray-tracing algorithm to simulate non-homogeneous environments. This allows the rapid investigation of radar imaging in more realistic environments that might be encountered in practice. We have previously shown that such arrays can be effective for short range backscatter imaging ...

A 94-GHz Millimeter-Wave Sensor for Speech Signal Acquisition

High frequency millimeter-wave (MMW) radar-like sensors enable the detection of speech signals. This novel non-acoustic speech detection method has some special advantages not offered by traditional microphones, such as preventing strong-acoustic interference, high directional sensitivity with penetration, and long detection distance. A 94-GHz MMW radar sensor was employed in this study to test...

High Resolution Imaging using 325 GHz and 1.5 THz Transceivers

The Submillimeter-Wave Technology Laboratory (STL) at the University of Massachusetts Lowell has designed and constructed two high resolution terahertz imaging systems based on 325 GHz and 1.5 THz transceivers. While the systems were originally designed to acquire radar signatures of high fidelity scale models, their high sensitivity and high stability at 325 GHz and 1.5 THz make them novel sys...

A FPGA-Based Replacement for a Network Analyzer in an Instrumentation-Based 200 GHz Radar

We are entering an exciting time where millimeter-wave (MMW) systems are encroaching into everyday life, examples being communications, auto-navigation, and security. It is instinctive to consider these systems in industrial settings, as well. Given the current energy climate, it may be possible to apply MMW technology in an effort to improve efficiency in power generation industries. Paper is ...

Comparison of Millimeter-Wave Cloud Radar Measurements for the Fall 1997 Cloud IOP

One of the primary objectives of the fall 1997 intensive observation period (IOP) was to intercompare Ka-band (35 GHz) and W-band (95 GHz) cloud radar observations and verify system calibrations. During September 1997, several cloud radars were deployed at the Southern Great Plains (SGP) Cloud and Radiation Testbed (CART) site, including the full time operation 35-GHz CART millimeterwave cloud ...
