The switch Markov chain for sampling irregular graphs

چکیده
The problem of efficiently sampling from a set of (undirected) graphs with a given degree sequence has many applications. One approach to this problem uses a simple Markov chain, which we call the switch chain, to perform the sampling. The switch chain is known to be rapidly mixing for regular degree sequences. We prove that the switch chain is rapidly mixing for any degree sequence with minimum degree at least 1 and with maximum degree dmax which satisfies 3 ≤ dmax ≤ 14 √ M , where M is the sum of the degrees. The mixing time bound obtained is only an order of n larger than that established in the regular case, where n is the number of vertices.

متن کاملThe switch Markov chain for sampling irregular graphs and digraphs
The problem of efficiently sampling from a set of (undirected, or directed) graphs with a given degree sequence has many applications. One approach to this problem uses a simple Markov chain, which we call the switch chain, to perform the sampling. The switch chain is known to be rapidly mixing for regular degree sequences, both in the undirected and directed setting. We prove that the switch c...
متن کاملNew Classes of Degree Sequences with Fast Mixing Swap Markov Chain Sampling
In network modeling of complex systems one is often required to sample random realizations of networks that obey a given set of constraints, often in form of graph measures. A much studied class of problems targets uniform sampling of simple graphs with given degree sequence or also with given degree correlations expressed in the form of a joint degree matrix. One approach is to use Markov chai...
متن کاملRapid Mixing of the Switch Markov Chain for Strongly Stable Degree Sequences
We show that the switch Markov chain for sampling simple undirected, as well as bipartite, graphs with a given degree sequence is rapidly mixing when the degree sequence is strongly stable. Strong stability is closely related to the notion of P-stability introduced by Jerrum and Sinclair (1990), and is satisfied by all degree sequences for which the switch chain is known to be rapidly mixing ba...
متن کاملComparing the Switch and Curveball Markov Chains for Sampling Binary Matrices with Fixed Marginals
The Curveball algorithm is a variation on well-known switch-based Markov Chain Monte Carlo approaches for the uniform sampling of binary matrices with fixed row and column sums. We give a spectral gap comparison between switch chains and the Curveball chain using a decomposition of the switch chain based on Johnson graphs. In particular, this comparison allows us to prove that the Curveball Mar...
