چکیده

An optical switch structure which combines a planar lightwave circuit and liquid crystal is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The switching is realized by inducing total internal reflection through controlling the refractive index of the liquid crystal. The principle and the design of the integrated optical switch are described. Experimental results suggest that anchoring of the liquid crystal molecules on nonplanar structures is very crucial in affecting the switching performance. © 2005 American Institute of Physics. fDOI: 10.1063/1.1935751g

Analysis of the Multireflection Effects in Compensated Liquid Crystal Devices

The effect of multiple internal reflections on the extinction ratio of perfectly compensated liquid crystal devices is studied. We find the previously unexplained wavelength dependence of light leakage in an ideally compensated device is caused by the interference of the internally reflected ordinary and extraordinary waves. While these effects have not been previously made clear, they can plac...

Photonic Crystal Fibers

Photonic crystal fibers are a new class of optical fibers. Their artificial crystal-like microstructure results in a number of unusual properties. They can guide light not only through a well-known total internal reflection mechanism but using also photonic bandgap effect. In this paper different properties possible to obtain in photonic crystal fibers are reviewed. Fabrication and modeling met...

A Thin Layer Imaging with the Total Internal Reflection Fluorescence Microscopy

Total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy (TIRFM) is an optical technique that allows imaging of a thin layer of the sample with a thickness of about 100-200 nm. It is used in science of cell biology to study cellular processes, especially near the membranes of living cells. This method is based on the total internal reflection phenomenon, where the evanescent wave is generated in the l...

Enhancing LCD Optical Efficiency with a Linearly Polarized Backlight and Polarization-preserving Light Guide Plate

We propose a new polarization-preserving edge-lit light guide plate (LGP) based on total internal reflection. Our simulation results show that such a LGP exhibits several attractive features: 1.54X higher polarization efficiency, 2.4X higher on-axis luminance, and no need for a brightness enhancement film. When integrated with a linearly polarized LED array, the LCD optical efficiency can be en...

Time-domain measurements of reflection delay in frustrated total internal reflection.

We present experimental evidence that the contribution of the Goos-Hänchen shift to tunneling delay is suppressed in frustrated total internal reflection. We use a Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer to perform direct time measurements of reflection delays with femtosecond resolution at optical frequencies, and take advantage of a liquid-crystal-filled double-prism structure to dynamically change the...
