چکیده
About the Author Max Sherman, Ph.D., is a senior scientist and group leader of the Energy Performance of Buildings Group at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, Calif. He is former chair of Standards Project Committee 62.2P, Ventilation and Acceptable Indoor Air Quality for Low-Rise Residential Buildings. s HVAC&R professionals, our major concern is the engineering of indoor environments. Most of our industry’s emphasis is on providing comfort conditioning, but as professionals, health and safety must also be a primary concern. For indoor environments, where concentrations of many pollutants can be two to at least five times greater than in outdoor air,9 source control and ventilation are key control means. People spend, on average, nearly 90% of their time indoors,10 with the majority of that time in their homes. These facts, taken together, would suggest that residential ventilation ought to have a large emphasis in ASHRAE.

Evaluation of Indoor Air Quality Screening Strategies: A Step-Wise Approach for IAQ Screening
Conducting a full indoor air quality (IAQ) assessment in air-conditioned offices requires large-scale material and manpower resources. However, an IAQ index can be adopted as a handy screening tool to identify any premises (with poor IAQ) that need more comprehensive IAQ assessments to prioritize IAQ improvements. This study proposes a step-wise IAQ screening protocol to facilitate its cost-eff...
متن کاملIndoor Air Quality in U.k. School Classrooms Ventilated by Natural Ventilation Windcatchers
The provision of good IAQ in schools is important both for the health of students and in maximising educational achievement. It is, however, common for school classrooms to be significantly under-ventilated and this can lead to high levels of CO 2 and other pollutants. Natural ventilation offers the potential to improve IAQ within schools whilst at the same time reducing running and maintenance...
متن کاملNational expenditures, jobs, and economic growth associated with indoor air quality in the United States.
While a number of studies have addressed the economic cost associated with adverse health and productivity effects of poor indoor air quality (IAQ), few have addressed the value of economic expenditures and job creation associated with this industry. This article estimates that the annual sale of IAQ products and services is valued at $18-$30 billion and is associated with approximately 150,000...
متن کاملSmartphone Application for Enhanced Indoor Health Environments
The reduced air quality inside buildings is undoubtedly a key factor to be controlled to ensure the health and comfort of the occupants as people usually spend more than 90% of their time in indoor environments. This paper aims to present iAQ an automatic system that is capable to monitoring indoor air quality and send real time notifications to provide active coaching for occupants in order to...
متن کاملLow-cost Sensors for Balancing Indoor Air Quality and Energy Usage
Saving energy and improving Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) and thermal comfort in buildings are traditionally competing goals. Facilities that manage one of these objectives well tend to compromise the other. Building Automation Systems (BAS) have been limited in their ability to sense these characteristics of a building and therefore cannot act on them. A majority of buildings define IAQ in terms of...
