Asymptotic stability of solitary waves in the Benney-Luke model of water waves
We study asymptotic stability of solitary wave solutions in the one-dimensional Benney-Luke equation, a formally valid approximation for describing two-way water wave propagation. For this equation, as for the full water wave problem, the classic variational method for proving orbital stability of solitary waves fails dramatically due to the fact that the second variation of the energy-momentum...
متن کاملStability of Solitary Waves for a Nonlinearly Dispersive Equation
Solitary-wave solutions of a nonlinearly dispersive equation are considered. It is found that solitary waves are peaked or smooth waves, depending on the wave speed. The stability of the smooth solitary waves also depends on the wave speed. Orbital stability is proved for some wave speeds, while instability is proved for others.
متن کاملStability and Instability of Solitary Wave Solutions of a Nonlinear Dispersive System of Benjamin-bona-mahony Type
This paper concerns the orbital stability and instability of solitary waves of the system of coupling equations of Benjamin-Bona-Mahony type. By applying the abstract results of Grillakis, Shatah and Strauss and detailed spectral analysis, we obtain the existence and stability of the solitary waves.
متن کاملOn the stability of internal waves
The extended KdV equation ut + uux + αuux + uxxx = 0 is widely used as a model describing internal waves in ideal fluids. The equation admits a family of negative and positive solitary waves c. These solitary waves exhibit the typical broadening effect seen in internal waves. It is shown here that all solitary-wave solutions of the extended KdV equation are orbitally stable. The proof of stabil...
متن کاملStability of multi antipeakon-peakons profile
Abstract. The Camassa-Holm equation possesses well-known peaked solitary waves that can travel to both directions. The positive ones travel to the right and are called peakon whereas the negative ones travel to the left and are called antipeakons. Their orbital stability has been established by Constantin and Strauss in [20]. In [28] we have proven the stability of trains of peakons. Here, we c...
