Geometric Methods for Improving the Upper Bounds on the Number of Rational Points on Algebraic Curves over Finite Fields

چکیده
Currently, the best upper bounds on the number of rational points on an absolutely irreducible, smooth, projective algebraic curve of genus g defined over a finite field Fq come either from Serre’s refinement of the Weil bound if the genus is small compared to q, or from Oesterlé’s optimization of the explicit formulae method if the genus is large. This paper presents three methods for improving these bounds. The arguments used are the indecomposability of the theta divisor of a curve, Galois descent, and Honda-Tate theory. Examples of improvements on the bounds include lowering them for a wide range of small genus when q = 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 5, 5, and when q = 2, s > 1. For large genera, isolated improvements are obtained for q = 3, 8, 9.

MAXIMAL PRYM VARIETY AND MAXIMAL MORPHISM
We investigated maximal Prym varieties on finite fields by attaining their upper bounds on the number of rational points. This concept gave us a motivation for defining a generalized definition of maximal curves i.e. maximal morphisms. By MAGMA, we give some non-trivial examples of maximal morphisms that results in non-trivial examples of maximal Prym varieties.
متن کاملOn the maximum number of rational points on singular curves over finite fields
We give a construction of singular curves with many rational points over finite fields. This construction enables us to prove some results on the maximum number of rational points on an absolutely irreducible projective algebraic curve defined over Fq of geometric genus g and arithmetic genus π.

In the interaction between algebraic geometry and classical coding theory the correspondence between words in trace codes C and Artin Schreier curves over finite fields is a central theme. This correspondence can be extended to a relation between subcodes of C and fibre products of Artin Schreier curves. As a consequence weights of words and subcodes are related to numbers of rational points on...
متن کاملRational points, genus and asymptotic behaviour in reduced algebraic curves over finite fields
The number A(q) shows the asymptotic behaviour of the quotient of the number of rational points over the genus of non-singular absolutely irreducible curves over IFq . Research on bounds for A(q) is closely connected with the so-called asymptotic main problem in Coding Theory. In this paper, we study some generalizations of this number for nonirreducible curves, their connection with A(q) and i...

Using an Euclidean approach, we prove a new upper bound for the number of closed points of degree 2 on a smooth absolutely irreducible projective algebraic curve defined over the finite field Fq. This bound enables us to provide explicit conditions on q, g and π for the nonexistence of absolutely irreducible projective algebraic curves defined over Fq of geometric genus g, arithmetic genus π an...
