چکیده

2 Chief, Orthopedic Surgery, Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N. C; Chief, Orthopedic and Prosthetic Appliance Clinic Team, Veterans Administration Hospital, Durham, N. C. When it is necessary to use a mechanical knee joint, whether it be in a below-knee prosthesis or a long-leg brace, ideally there should be no relative motion between the patient's limb and the appliance during its use. Because the human knee is not a single-axis joint, analogues of the human knee employing more than one axis of rotation have been developed but none have proven practical, owing largely to bulkiness, but to some degree to cost. At this time, therefore, we are faced with the problem of determining a method of placing the center of rotation of a single-axis mechanical knee joint with respect to the knee so that the least amount of relative motion will occur between the patient and the appliance. This article describes a method of determining the optimum location of single-axis knee joints, based on data accumulated recently from X-rays and from cadaver dissection.

Dynamics of a Running Below-Knee Prosthesis Compared to Those of a Normal Subject

The normal human running has been simulated by two-dimensional biped model with 7 segments. Series of normal running experiments were performed and data of ground reaction forces measured by force plate was analyzed and was fitted to some Fourier series. The model is capable to simulate running for different ages and weights at different running speeds. A proportional derivative control algorit...

Analysis of Interrelationships among Voluntary and Prosthetic Leg Joint Parameters Using Cyclograms

The walking mechanism of a prosthetic leg user is a tightly coordinated movement of several joints and limb segments. The interaction among the voluntary and mechanical joints and segments requires particular biomechanical insight. This study aims to analyze the inter-relationship between amputees' voluntary and mechanical coupled leg joints variables using cyclograms. From this analysis, the c...

Effect of Selective Home-Based Exercises on Chronic Low Back Pain in Unilateral Below Knee Amputees

Aims: Different studies have shown different effects of exercise on low back pain. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of selective home-based exercises on chronic low back pain in unilateral below knee amputees. Materials and Methods: In this randomized controlled clinical trial with pretest-posttest design conducted in 2016, 53 unilateral below knee amputees with chronic lo...

Design and Evaluation of a Magnetorheological Damper Based Prosthetic Knee

In this work, a magnetorheological (MR) damper based above-knee prosthesis is design and evaluated based on its performance in swing phase and in stance phase. Initially, a dynamic system model for swing phase of a prosthetic leg incorporating a single-axis knee with ideal MR damper was built. The dynamic properties of the damper are represented with Bingham parametric model. From Bingham model...

Kinematic and dynamic performance of prosthetic knee joint using six-bar mechanism.

Six-bar linkages have been used in some prosthetic knees in the past years, but only a few publications have been written on the special functions of the mechanism as used in transfemoral prosthesis. This paper investigates the advantages of the mechanism as used in the prosthetic knee from the kinematic and dynamic points of view. Computer simulation and an experimental method were used in the...
