A parallel multiphase flow code for the 3D simulation of explosive volcanic eruptions
نویسندگان
چکیده
A new parallel code for the simulation of the transient, 3D dispersal of volcanic particles in the atmosphere is presented. The model equations, describing the multiphase flow dynamics of gas and solid pyroclasts ejected from the volcanic vent during explosive eruptions, are solved by a finite-volume discretization scheme and a pressure-based iterative non-linear solver suited to compressible multiphase flows. The solution of the multiphase equation set is computationally so demanding that the simulation of the transient 3D dynamics of eruptive columns would not be cost-effective on a single workstation. The new code has been parallelized by adopting an ad hoc domain partitioning scheme that enforces the load balancing in the presence of a large number of topographic blocking-cells. An optimized communication layer has been built over the Message-Passing Interface. It is shown that the present code has a remarkable efficiency on several high-performance platforms and makes it possible, for the first time, to simulate fully 3D eruptive scenarios on realistic volcano topography. 2007 Elsevier B.V. Evidence for Recent Large Magnitude Explosive Eruptions at Damavand Volcano, Iran with Implications for Volcanic Hazards
Damavand is a large dormant stratovolcano in the Alborz Mountains of northern Iran located in one of the most populous provinces, which could be adversely affected by tephra fall from Damavand. The youngest known eruption is a lava flow on the western flanks with an age of 7.3 ka. The volcanic products are predominantly porphyritic trachyandesite. Three major young pumice deposits, named here a...
متن کامل4D simulation of explosive eruption dynamics at Vesuvius
[1] We applied a new simulation model, based on multiphase transport laws, to describe the 4D (3D spatial coordinates plus time) dynamics of explosive eruptions. Numerical experiments, carried out on a parallel supercomputer, describe the collapse of the volcanic eruption column and the propagation of pyroclastic density currents (PDCs), for selected medium scale (sub-Plinian) eruptive scenario...
متن کاملEvaluation of two lattice Boltzmann methods for fluid flow simulation in a stirred tank
In the present study, commonly used weakly compressible lattice Boltzmann method and Guo incompressible lattice Boltzmann method have been used to simulate fluid flow in a stirred tank. For this purpose a 3D Parallel code has been developed in the framework of the lattice Boltzmann method. This program has been used for simulation of flow at different geometries such as 2D channel fluid flow an...
متن کاملUnsteady high‐pressure flow experiments with applications to explosive volcanic eruptions
[1] Motivated by the hypothesis that volcanic blasts can have supersonic regions, we investigate the role of unsteady flow in jets from a high‐pressure finite reservoir. We examine the processes for formation of far‐field features, such as Mach disk shocks, by using a shock tube facility and numerical experiments to investigate phenomena to previously unobtained pressure ratios of 250:1. The Ma...
متن کاملRapid laccolith intrusion driven by explosive volcanic eruption
Magmatic intrusions and volcanic eruptions are intimately related phenomena. Shallow magma intrusion builds subsurface reservoirs that are drained by volcanic eruptions. Thus, the long-held view is that intrusions must precede and feed eruptions. Here we show that explosive eruptions can also cause magma intrusion. We provide an account of a rapidly emplaced laccolith during the 2011 rhyolite e...
