Vinyon "N" as dural substitute and its use in other neurosurgical conditions.

چکیده
The search for a material to be utilized as dural substitute has been a continuous one for the last six decades. Many materials have been tried, including the different metals, various biological tissues, and plant derivatives. Recently, synthetic products have been utilized as dural substitute. Among these, Vinyon "N" (Teng and Feigin, 1955), Teflon (Teng, unpublished data), and Orlon* (Huertas, 1955) have shown the most promising results, producing only minimal tissue reaction when buried intracranially in experimental animals. Since publication of the results obtained in experimental monkeys, Vinyon "N" has been used in 40 clinical cases with various neurosurgical conditions, which included its use as (1) dural substitute in repairs of dural defects produced by surgery, trauma, or tumour; (2) bone lining, in the prevention of bone reunion in craniostenosis; and (3) nerve wrap after neurolysis in cicatrization (Table I).

The use of Teflon as a dural substitute and its other neurosurgical applications.
During the last seven decades many materials have been experimentally tried as dural substitutes, and many have been discarded after being clinically introduced. In recent years, satisfactory results from Orlan (Huertas, 1955), Vinyon 'N' (Teng and Feigin, 1955; Teng, 1961), and homologous dura mater (Crawford, 1957; Campbell, Bassett, and Robertson, 1958) as dural substitutes have been reporte...
متن کاملUse of an Absorbable Synthetic Polymer Dural Substitute for Repair of Dural Defects: A Technical Note
Repair of the dura after cranial neurosurgery can present a technical challenge and, for certain neurosurgical procedures, is critical to prevent cerebrospinal fluid leak and associated wound complications. Multiple options exist for dural repair, including the patient's own tissues, bovine collagen-derived commercially available grafts, as well as newer, entirely synthetic graft materials. Thi...
متن کاملCerafix® Dura Substitute Effectively Repairs Small and Large Dural Defects Independent of Defect Size
Background: Dural substitutes are commonly utilized to repair dural defects incurred during routine neurosurgical procedures. The ideal dura substitute should effectively seal the defect, encourage neoduralization, and regenerate native dura prior to graft resorption. Cerafix® Dura Substitute is a novel non-biologic, fully-resorbable graft that has previously been shown to successfully repair c...
متن کاملA Protocol for Diagnosis and Management of Cerebrospinal Shunt Infections and other Infectious Conditions in Neurosurgical Practice
Infections of the cerebrospinal shunts and other neurosurgical structures are not uncommon in the clinical practice. These infections are mostly clinical emergencies carrying negative prognostic impacts on the patients as well as spending healthcare resources. The low pathogenicity nature of some implicated pathogens results in minimal physical signs that may complicate the diagnosis and mislea...
متن کاملA multicenter, single-blind, prospective randomized trial to evaluate the safety of a polyethylene glycol hydrogel (Duraseal Dural Sealant System) as a dural sealant in cranial surgery.
OBJECTIVE Incisional cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage after cranial surgery is a significant cause of morbidity due to poor wound healing and infection, meningitis, and pseudomeningocele formation. Many common dural closure techniques, such as sutures, autologous grafts, gelatin or collagen sponges, and fibrin glues, are used to achieve watertight closure, although none are US Food and Drug Ad...
