High-order boundary integral equation solution of high frequency wave scattering from obstacles in an unbounded linearly stratified medium

چکیده
We apply boundary integral equations for the first time to the two-dimensional scattering of time-harmonic waves from a smooth obstacle embedded in a continuously-graded unbounded medium. In the case we solve, the square of the wavenumber (refractive index) varies linearly in one coordinate, i.e. (∆ + E + x2)u(x1, x2) = 0 where E is a constant; this models quantum particles of fixed energy in a uniform gravitational field, and has broader applications to stratified media in acoustics, optics and seismology. We evaluate the fundamental solution efficiently with exponential accuracy via numerical saddle-point integration, using the truncated trapezoid rule with typically 102 nodes, with an effort that is independent of the frequency parameter E. By combining with a high-order Nyström quadrature, we are able to solve the scattering from obstacles 50 wavelengths across to 11 digits of accuracy in under a minute on a desktop or laptop.

On the eigenmodes of periodic orbits for multiple scattering problems in 2D
Wave propagation and acoustic scattering problems require vast computational resources to be solved accurately at high frequencies. Asymptotic methods can make this cost potentially frequency independent by explicitly extracting the oscillatory properties of the solution. However, the high-frequency wave pattern becomes very complicated in the presence of multiple scattering obstacles. We consi...
متن کاملAxisymmetric Scaled Boundary Finite Element Formulation for Wave Propagation in Unbounded Layered Media
Wave propagation in unbounded layered media with a new formulation of Axisymmetric Scaled Boundary Finite Element Method (AXI-SBFEM) is derived. Dividing the general three-dimensional unbounded domain into a number of independent two-dimensional ones, the problem could be solved by a significant reduction in required storage and computational time. The equations of the corresponding Axisymmetri...

We first review the basic existence results for exterior boundary value problems for the Helmholtz equation via boundary integral equations. Then we describe the numerical solution of these integral equations in two dimensions for a smooth boundary curve using trigonometric polynomials on an equidistant mesh. We provide a comparison of the NystrGm method, the collocation method and the Gale&in ...

We present a high-order, high-frequency solver for the numerical solution of problems of electromagnetic or acoustic scattering by bounded surfaces. This algorithm, which combines the use of an ansatz for the unknown density in a boundary integral formulation with an extension of the ideas of the method of stationary phase, can resolve problems of arbitrarily high-frequencies with a prescribed ...

This paper presents a three dimensional application of direct Boundary-Element Method (BEM) for computing interaction of sinusoidal waves with a large submerged open bottom structure near the floor with finite depth. The wave diffraction problem is formulated within the framework of linearized potential theory and solved numerically with direct BEM. A computer program based on BEM is developed ...
