چکیده
A Cambridge electronics firm has developed an automatic sweetfeeder machine which encourages shy, inhibited children to speak by rewarding them with sugar-coated chocolate drops when their voices reach a certain level of volume. Talking into the machine, the child answers a series of ten questions and, his replies are given at a pre-set sound level, electric bulbs light up and a sweet is released from a glass tube into a trough where it can be reached. The required sound level can be raised as the child progresses so that gradually he is encouraged to speak louder to obtain the reward. Each machine costs about ?20, plus a basic cost of about ?40 for programming. Several are already being used in special schools where autistic children?who are so with-
