Dynamics Forced by Surface Trellises

چکیده

Given a saddle fixed point of a surface diffeomorphism, its stable and unstable curves W S and W U often form a homoclinic tangle. Given such a tangle, we use topological methods to find periodic points of the diffeomorphism, using only a subset of the tangle with finitely many points of intersection, which we call a trellis. We typically obtain exponential growth of periodic orbits, symbolic dynamics and a strictly positive lower bound for topological entropy. For a simple example occurring in the Hénon family, we show that the topological entropy is at least 0.527.

On the Algebraic Structure of Linear Trellises

Trellises are crucial graphical representations of codes. While conventional trellises are well understood, the general theory of (tail-biting) trellises is still under development. Iterative decoding concretely motivates such theory. In this paper we first develop a new algebraic framework for a systematic analysis of linear trellises which enables us to address open foundational questions. In...

Tail-biting Trellises for Linear Codes and their Duals

Trellis representations of linear block codes are attractive because of their use in soft decision decoding algorithms. An interesting property that is known for conventional trellises is that the minimal conventional trellis (known to be unique) for a linear block code, and its dual have the same state-complexity profile. This interesting property follows from the BCJR construction [1] of the ...

Forced vibration of piezoelectric nanowires based on nonlocal elasticity theory

In this paper, a numerical solution procedure is presented for the free and forced vibration of a piezoelectric nanowire under thermo-electro-mechanical loads based on the nonlocal elasticity theory within the framework of Timoshenko beam theory. The influences of surface piezoelectricity, surface elasticity and residual surface stress are taken into consideration. Using Hamilton’s principle, t...

On the Theory of Linear Trellises

Trellis linearity, rst considered by McEliece in 1996, turns out to be crucial in the study of tail-biting trellises. In this chapter, basic structural properties of linear trellises are investigated. A rigorous deeni-tion of linearity is given for both conventional and tail-biting trellises. An algorithm that determines in polynomial time whether a given trellis is linear is then derived. The ...

A Coset Construction for Tail-Biting Trellises

A coset construction is presented for tail-biting trellises which for a given linear block code C computes a non-mergeable linear trellis representing C. This construction is analogous to the Forney construction for minimal conventional trellises. Unlike the case of conventional trellises where the Forney construction and the Kschischang-Sorokine (KS) product construction give isomorphic trelli...
