The pathological anatomy of convex pes valgus.

چکیده
Convex pes valgus (vertical talus) is a rare form of congenital foot deformity, the etiology of which remains unexplained. The 10 per cent incidence in a large series of patients with foot deformities in myelomeningocele (Sharrard and Grosfield 1968) suggests that a specific neuromuscular imbalance may be responsible, at least in myelodysplastic patients, for the development of the “Persian slipper foot”. The single report in the literature discussing the anatomy of this deformity (Patterson, Fitz and Smith 1968) does not describe the significant changes in the course of major tendons and their consequent altered function, nor does it discuss the intrinsic foot musculature. This paper presents a detailed description ofthe pathological anatomy in a case of myelomeningocele with congenital pes valgus. The concept that a neuromuscular imbalance between the invertors and evertors of the foot causes this deformity will be discussed.

The treatment of paralytic convex pes valgus.
Descriptions in the literature of the treatment of congenital convex pes valgus have been mainly concerned with patients who have not shown any overt paralytic lesion (Lloyd-Roberts and Spence 1958, Herndon and Heyman 1963, Eyre-Brook 1967, Harrold 1967). Convex pes valgus, or vertical talus deformity of the foot, quite often occurs in association with malformation of the central nervous system...

The painful pes planovalgus foot type includes a range of deformities. Causes for the symptomatic pes valgus deformity include posterior tibial tendon dysfunction, subluxation of the talus, triceps surae or isolated gastrocnemius equinus, traumatic tendon rupture, ligament laxity, and various neuromuscular imbalances. Detailed discussion of the anatomy and physiology of the symptomatic pes plan...
متن کاملCongenital convex pes valgus (congenital vertical talus). The condition and its treatment: a review of the literature.
Much discussion exists about the best operative technique to treat congenital convex pes valgus. In this article a table of surgical approaches and an algorithm, based upon literature review, are presented. In our opinion the technique of choice in a child younger than 2 years of age is extensive release with lengthening of tendons and fixation procedures. In a child over 2 years of age, extens...
متن کاملCongenital convex pes valgus.
Congenital convex pes valgus (congenital vertical talus) is a rare condition. We reviewed ten feet in seven patients who had had surgical correction. All had been operated on by the senior author (JF) and the same surgical technique was used throughout, incorporating transfer of the tibialis anterior to the neck of the talus. The mean age at surgery was 31 months and the mean follow-up was nine...
متن کاملFactors associated with hallux valgus in a population-based study of older women and men: the MOBILIZE Boston Study.
OBJECTIVE To examine potential risk factors for hallux valgus in community-dwelling elders. METHOD Data from 600 MOBILIZE Boston Study participants (386 women and 214 men) were analyzed. Hallux valgus was defined as >15 degrees angular deviation of the hallux with respect to the first metatarsal bone toward the lesser toes. Associations of hallux valgus with age, body mass index (BMI), race, ...
