Germline stem cells in the postnatal mammalian ovary: A phenomenon of prosimian primates and mice?
نویسنده
چکیده
The paper by Johnson et al. "Germ line stem cells and follicular renewal in the postnatal mammalian ovary" published in Nature on the 11th of March [1] suggests that a population of germ line stem cells exist within the adult mouse ovary and that oocyte numbers are regulated by a balance of activation of these cells and cell death. This paper should be viewed in its historical context as it reignites a debate that was thought to have been settled in the 1950s but one in which exceptions to the accepted dogma have previously been found.

Isolation and characterization of string-forming female germline stem cells from ovaries of neonatal mice.
Germline stem cells are essential in the generation of both male and female gametes. In mammals, the male testis produces sperm throughout the entire lifetime, facilitated by testicular germline stem cells. Oocyte renewal ceases in postnatal or adult life in mammalian females, suggesting that germline stem cells are absent from the mammalian ovary. However, studies in mice, rats, and humans hav...
متن کاملP-92: Assessment of Stem Cells in Adult Mouse Ovaries during Estrous Cycle
Background: The concepts of reproductive biology were changed by stating the ovarian reserve in postnatal mammalian females is replenished. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of OCT4 in the mice ovarian tissue during different stages of mouse estrous cycle. Materials and Methods: The mice were considered as pro-estrous, estrous, met-estrous and di-estrous based on the cell ...
متن کاملThe Controversy, Challenges, and Potential Benefits of Putative Female Germline Stem Cells Research in Mammals.
The conventional view is that female mammals lose their ability to generate new germ cells after birth. However, in recent years, researchers have successfully isolated and cultured a type of germ cell from postnatal ovaries in a variety of mammalian species that have the abilities of self-proliferation and differentiation into oocytes, and this finding indicates that putative germline stem cel...
متن کاملGenetic and Epigenetic landscape of Germline Stem Cells
Elucidating the critical epigenetics events involved in differentiation and reprogramming of cells to primordial germ cells (PGCs) is among the interesting issues in stem cell research. Here, I will talk about critical transcription factors and global hypomethylation in development of germ cells. Evidence strongly suggests that the earliest PGCs emerging in the E7.25 mouse embryo epiblast have...
متن کاملI-18: Avian Chimeras and Germ Cell Migration
Background: In avian species, the germ line stem cell population arises outside of the embryonic gonad and proceeds on a circuitous migration to the germinal epithelium. Specifically, in the avian embryo, the process of germ line stem cell migration proceeds through a series of active and passive migratory phases. The germline stem cells or primordial germ cells (PGCs) located in the epiblast o...
