Development and evolution of the MHAUS cognitive aid for malignant hyperthermia

چکیده
Background Cognitive aids help the stressed practitioner in an emergency setting carry out complex tasks. Ideally, they ensure the completion of key steps and prevent unnecessary ones. Malignant hyperthermia is an emergency event that lends itself to the use of a cognitive aid. Experts associated with the Malignant Hyperthermia Association (MHAUS) first developed a cognitive aid in the form of a “poster” in the mid-1980s.

Activated charcoal adsorption of volatile anesthetic agents for anesthesia machine preparation of malignant hyperthermia susceptible patients.
To the editor: We would like to share recent advancements regarding the utilization of activated charcoal filters to adsorb volatile anesthetic agents (VAAs). Although activated charcoal has been known for many years to adsorb VAAs,1-3 it has only recently become commercially available and endorsed by the Malignant Hyperthermia Association of the United States (MHAUS).4 MHAUS has put forth upda...
متن کاملPreparation of modern anesthesia workstations for malignant hyperthermia-susceptible patients: when are they really clean?
Introduction: Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is a rare, potentially fatal genetic disorder characterized by increased cellular metabolism of skeletal muscle in response to succinylcholine and certain inhalational anesthetics. The Malignant Hyperthermia Association of the United States (MHAUS) has established guidelines for the perioperative management of MH-susceptible patients to minimize their r...
متن کاملCore myopathies and malignant hyperthermia susceptibility: a review.
The core myopathies are a subset of myopathies that present in infancy with hypotonia and muscle weakness. They were formerly considered a rare type of congenital myopathy but are now recognized as being more prevalent. Due to their genetic linkage to mutations in the ryanodine receptor gene (RYR1), core myopathies (in particular, central core disease) carry a high risk of malignant hyperthermi...
متن کاملCompartmental pharmacokinetics of dantrolene in adults: do malignant hyperthermia association dosing guidelines work?
Dantrolene is the only drug proven effective for prevention and treatment of malignant hyperthermia (MH). Current dosing recommendations are based on noncompartmental analyses and are largely empiric. They are also divergent, as evidenced by differing recommendations from the Malignant Hyperthermia Association of the United States (MHAUS) and European Sources. We determined the compartmental ph...
متن کاملSUPRAVENTRICULAR TACHYCARDIA FOLLOWING SECOND INDUCTION OF ANESTHESIA IN A PATIENT DIAGNOSED AS MALIGNANT HYPERTHERMIA AFTER FIRST ANESTHETIC EXPOSURE: TERMINOLOGY REQUIRES A SECOND LOOK
A 17 year old male who underwent surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome developed a postoperative complication which was labelled and diagnosed as malignant hyperthermia in Kerman Medical Center. The temperature recorded was 43°C, PaC02 70 mmHg and serum potassium level was 7 mEq/L. The patient was hospitalized in the intensive care unit for 10 days. On discharge, the patient had aphasia and...
